I think my cat tolerates kisses, but I went on vacation for a week once and when I came back, she was very excited to see me and shoved her forehead into my face(which normally she never does), so I'm sure she understands what it means.

Sociable animals share in affections for one another in the form of facial contact and other things. It's not just grooming or cleaning nor does it have to be inspired by human contact.
My cat always welcomes me home with a delightful chorus of MEYOU!! ( Cats think they speak human and also believe they can read our minds so they think we are stupid when we talk to them) Adamantly conveying his pleasure with my arrival. When I sit down at my desk he jumps up on it and gives me a great big kiss right smack dead center on my lips, sometimes with a tiny bit of tongue. Then just like a frenchman he rubs his cheeks against my cheeks, chin to chin, eskimo nose rubs and head butts. When I lie down he chirps inquiring if he can be "My Cat" and cuddle in my armpit so he can nuzzle his head into the nape of my neck, sigh a great big sigh of satisfaction. I don't know where he gets these notions I don't force any attention on him. He forces his attention on me and his actions are not contrived manipulations but very sincere so my ex wife has nothing to do with it.

My cat is so funny, one day she tried to imitate what she thought of as a "kiss" & leaned over & put her mouth on my cheek & held it there. I decided to wait to see what she'd do. She just held it there & it lasted so long I burst out laughing & she moved away. It was one of the funniest things she's ever done. I continue to kiss her cheeks & the top of her head b/c she's cuddly & I can't stop.
I had a friend who took care of foster kitties & one of them would wrap his arms around you when you picked them up & hug you. So some cats can absolutley learn to hug.
My cat has 1 eye, but can distincly slow blink or wink her 1 eye at me. She will give me winks & blinks. It's so funny. Just b/c they can't laugh doesn't mean they're not amused.

cat knows when you are sick. my cat would sleep right next to meach when I am sick. other times she just sleep by my feet. my cat know what time I get up for work and if my alarm doesn't go off , she will come meowing until I get up. I'm so sad that she passed away suddenly on Dec 18 2023 at only 7 years.

My cat absolutely knows kisses are a sign of affection. I'll smooch him on the head and he will purr and squint his eyes, and he will answer the kiss with a head bump. He doesn't mind hugs, either, as long as they're nice and loose, and I carry him by resting him on my forearm without holding him, so that he can jump off me if he wants. He'll gladly let himself be carried that way.
