In this week’s newsletter, read about the non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace Getgems betting on Telegram to drive NFT adoption in 2025 and how OpenSea users are unhappy with its initial release of the trading platform’s version 2. In other news, the DraftKings lawsuit against the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) may be coming to a close through a legal settlement.
Getgems bets on Telegram to boost NFT adoption in 2025
Even though NFT volumes and sales were significantly lower in 2024, The Open Network’s (TON) NFT marketplace Getgems remains optimistic about adoption, viewing Telegram’s foray into Web3 as an opportunity for NFTs.
The Getgems team said Telegram and its large user base may spur adoption. The team told Cointelegraph that while NFTs had a “big moment” in the past, they never had a connection with a large number of users similar to Telegram.
With previous NFT collections like Usernames and Anonymous Numbers getting about $480 million in trading volume, Getgems said that demand and usability for Telegram NFTs have been proven.
OpenSea faces backlash over “OS2” private beta, airdrop dynamics
Many OpenSea users were unhappy with the marketplace as it revealed the private beta of the trading platform’s new version. Users went on X to express their frustration over who gets initial access to the new marketplace and the dynamics of an upcoming token airdrop.
Users who have accessed the new platform reported that the marketplace revealed a new dynamic called points. However, users said the new platform does not give retroactive points to old users. This means that users of the second platform will have to start from scratch.
NFT trader Beanie said in a post that the decision does not consider users who generated significant trading fees for OpenSea. Beanie urged the community to send OpenSea’s token to zero when it launches.
DraftKings settles NFL union suit over NFT pay dispute
US sports betting platform DraftKings settled with the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA), which accused the site of failing to pay for using NFL player likenesses in NFTs.
The NFLPA and DraftKings said in a joint letter to a New York federal judge that they had mediated the suit and reached a settlement. The two parties asked the court for a 60-day stay of suit, which would give them until March 28 to finalize the settlement.
The NFLPA sued DraftKings in August, seeing $65 million in damages, based on figures shared through the lawsuit. However, details of the settlement were not revealed.
