I'm 46, played D&D once when I was a teen, and I spent the whole time trying to "Get" with an elf. Anyway, I watched this completely blind and I really enjoyed it. So much so that I have recently begun playing D&D with my sons.
I wachted this movie 3 times in a row, the third time with my parents and they enjoyed it too, even though thy aren't like fans of the fantasy genre and didn't even heard of the game.
Your gonna die one day and leave behind a worthless legacy
They thought the movie would let them get away with disappointments. Instead, they caused their movie to be disappointing. – The Sphinx
Thank you for this video, professor Decision Maker.
There was a Dragon Lance cartoon but it wasn't very successful. I WOULD LOVE to see it done right.
What’s absolutely nuts to me is that Drizzt Do’Urden was initially going to be in the script, but he got replaced by the paladin character. I have no idea why whoever made this movie thought that was a good idea, especially since the paladin was supposed to be a guide for the underdark.
It was an okay movie but just not a memorable one. IMO should had less comedy and more monsters.
Just watched it on Amazon. I didn't go to the theater because of the OGL garbage that WotC did. I honestly have left D&D altogether. I have binned most my stuff. I will pull it out again if WotC actually shows they care, until then I will give my time to companies that care. Movie wasn't too bad. I will say the fat dragon was pretty good.
I love love loved this film. I loved the way they told the store. I loved characters. By the way. There were no inns in the Middle Ages so please stop comparing DnD to the Middle Ages. The two are so different. The first fight scene it was the best fight scene. You missed the mark on this one. I’m glad you have and shared your opinion, and I disagree. I hope there is a second one.
I feel pretty much the same as you. My son and his friends (millennials) loved it and found it inspiring. I chalk that up to the more "High Fantasy" D&D, Anime and Super Hero stuff that makes up today's entertainment.
It might be a generational difference.
A movie based around Dragonlance? Ummm … no. Dragonlance – at least for me (someone who's been playing since '77) – represented the worst era of D&D. Horrible books. Horrible modules. Boring Hippy storytelling D&D. Set it in Greyhawk if you want iconic characters. 😉
Its not amazing but it's really not that bad this video is really dramatic.
I still haven't watched it on Netflix. It's the principle. Any shady company that hires the Pinkertons to terrorize an innocent family does not get my money or attention
5:41 Is he really, though? 😊
This movie it's like if characters from Jumanji got sucked into a TTRPG. I'm sad this is now the complacent standard for cinema.
I enjoyed the movie immensely. I had not intended to see it due to WotC's prelaunch actions and attitudes but my wife talked me into it (and I thanked her for that).
TBH, the only thing I've ever heard Hugh Grant in that got any press was when he got caught in a pickup truck in traffic getting serviced by a female impersonator with a heavy mustache and was run into the slammer. Kind of an esoteric taste way out of my purview, and probably why it's the only thing I've ever remembered of his entire career.
Skipped the movie. I've been boycotting everything TSR/WOTC-related since 1982. If you're going to hold a grudge, it's worth holding forever.
I really like the nod to Dragonlance, but may be just may be – Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman sue Wizards of the Coast after it abandons new Dragonlance trilogy, could be a reason no Dragonlance. And Professor DM forgot to do you homework – Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Producer Reveals Drizzt's Original Role in Movie. Yeah, Drizzt was to appear, but replaced with Paladin dude.
This video just proved to me that I would NEVER want to be in one of your campaigns. Holy crap, I pity everyone who has to endure whatever bullshit campaign you're leading.
Holy shit, this is a terrible review…
And why would you give any shit on what some random "critic" says when that critic clearly has NO idea about DnD or the fantasy genre in general.
Sorry, but you're just old. Stay back in your own millenium, if you want, but don't cry about it online.
These comments showcase the key failing of modern entertainment: People praising something does not equal people putting down money for it.
The movie did not appeal to most people, in and out of the hobby, plain and simple. The results speak the truth.
I enjoyed it. It was "fun" and I'm glad that they gave it to us. Hasbro is slowly killing WotC. I think the gaming industry will be very different in two years—DnD and Magic will disappear and they'll be replaced by better games. I'm here for it. Great movie!
I liked it. But yeah the dedication to Hasbro, the people ruining DnD was a slap in the face.
Why does everything need an explanation? These people live in a high magic world. Of course there’s magic gizmos everywhere.
I’ll take more of these than any more transformers or fast and the furious films.
Based on the initial reviews and box office performance, I decided to pass on seeing this in the theater. Finally got around to seeing it. sigh Reading these reviews…people are trying awfully hard to like it…but I thought it was hot garbage. I don't know what "average" people look for in their D&D, but slapstick comedy with lame jokes isn't how we play. It almost lost me right away by casting a woman as the barbarian/fighter character. Call me a misogynist, but I just can't ever buy it when this happens. I don't know…as far as being "D&D," it just fails on so many levels. The party composition makes no sense, and for a movie based on DUNGEONS and Dragons, it's awfully lacking in dungeons (and the dragons it presents are barely worthy of the name). The overall premise is just Disney dumb (except that even Disney is rarely this dumb), riddled with plot holes and lazy writing, and reeks of a story developed by a committee designed to appeal to a set of targeted demographics. The woke/diversity casting is slight enough that it's tolerable, but it's still there. Overall, the filmmaking committee that put this together missed so many opportunities to create something cool I can't believe any of them actually know what D&D is. I agree that the Hasbro credit for Dungeons & Dragons and no mention of Gygax and Arneson is unforgivable. Overall, this was a marketing tool for Hasbro, aimed at the lowest common denominator, and they got exactly what they thought they wanted. This movie wasn't worthy of a theatrical release…it should have gone straight to streaming…
I enjoyed it.
I avoid like the plague spending my hard earned money on any WOTC products. At this point, unless they fire their entire woke staff, it' never forget never forgive all they have done.
My main problem with it is the druid has not enough lines.
I had to wait to watch this video, my own personal torture, because I wanted to see the movie first. Wanting to see it but not wanting to give WoTC or Hasbro any of my money as they tried to take my creations and say they were theirs. I just got to see it as a friend used a free week of streaming service to let my group watch it, I liked the movie…. mostly. Prof DM has it right, magic was not explained and used IMHO way too much. Besides the jailbreak, was Chris Pine even really needed in the movie? Anyhow I'm glad i saw it and glad I could finally see this video. Please keep up the good work and it looks like your box office prediction is about spot on.
Hollywood knows Dragonlance is cringe
Boo imagine requiring every trap to be explained, it doesn't happen
I enjoyed this movie. What I expected. I agree with the tiredness with the GotG format. Perhaps it would be better as an animation?
New D&D: Honor Among Thieves movie is woke trash! The weak white male lead character in an interracial relationship. Bumbling black beta male elf mage. All female characters are strong, confident, & competent. The only "male" portrayed that way is an obviously flaming black cleric. It's supposedly rated a 7.9/10🤣presumably by bots & NPCs. Woke propaganda aside and with a classically speaking analysis; the movie lacks strong memorable characters with a poorly written story and numerous plot holes. I'd never thought I'd be saying this, but all the other D&D movies- even the one with the Wayons brother were actually better than this…SMH
Watched the movie a few days ago and I loved it. Really fun movie.
Unlike previous D&D movies, the preview for Honor Among Thieves actually looked good. So, naturally, I wanted to see it and expected it to be good. What I didn't expect was just how good it would be. It easily ranks among the likes of Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and the Matrix. I look forward to seeing it again and again, it is definitely one of the top ten best movies I have ever seen
It's really hard to capture of all the millions of ways people enjoy playing D&D, in a movie. However, there is one thing that I expected as fundamental, and that is that teamwork of a diverse team should be the key focus. Too often, one person alone could defeat a group of guards. Where was the teamwork? Too often, one person determined the plan. Where was the collaboration? Too often, a special thing was the solution. Where was the ingenuity? "I've got this!" "I know what this is." "I know what to do." "I have the thing." Having played D&D when it started, this movie does not remind me of playing D&D. I do believe the movie is inline with 5e though, in that 5e seems to promote super-heroes and the group is really just for numbers rather than diversity. In early D&D, every skill / function / role was typically provided by one or two characters; and the party had to work out how to protect the non-fighters while they did their thing and everyone was necessary because of their diversity. It feels like 5e promotes diversity in name only because it seems that every class can fight, every class can do magic, every class can do … everything; which equates to no diversity. The names are diverse.
I was looking for more story. More "hero's journey" for each character, where time is spent on us getting to know each character and connect with them (not identify with them but connect with them even when I don't identify with them). I was looking for a straightforward goal, complication, challenge, and resolution. Too often, for me, there was stuff happening and I was asking what is happening and why? Don't worry about that! It's stuff! You don't need to understand it, learn about it, or have an emotional connection develop. Just watch!
I'm also thinking about people that have never played D&D and how the movie prepares them for playing the game. The movie does not prepare new players for old school RPGs. Perhaps it does orient players to 5e. I found over-powering creates noise and diminishes meaning.
There were some good things in the movie, but I felt it was compromised by the executive checkboxes that had to be ticked rather than a creative team being allowed to freely create. I'm too aware of all the things they had to get into the movie, to tick them off the list. Each occurrence just made the movie shallower for me. Creativity was only in joining up the checkboxes rather than being allowed to come up with a complete structure of a new concept expressed in terms we can relate too with multiple intertwining character arcs.
Thanks for your video Professor Direct Message.
Yours truly, Private Deep and Meaningful. 😉
It was worse than that. Unwatchable
I thought it was merely good, it was in no way bad, just not great. Also I was hoping the post-credit scene would have been a bunch of kids/teenagers/adults packing up after completing the campaign. Which I would have preferred to the actual scene we got.
My review of this movie essentially aligns with what professor DM said. It felt like another popcorn inspired Marvel movie where nothing is taken seriously and it's just full of dry jokes and bad CGI. It reminded me a lot of the failed Warcraft movie that came out a few years ago except that movie was slightly better.
I thought it was a fun movie, but it definitely wasn't anything special. If they removed the branding "Dungeons and Dragons," it would have been just another mediocre fantasy film. It definitely felt like pop 5E, and not like the more gritty, grounded low-fantasy setting that would have been more relatable for my own preferred play style, but hey, D&D is one of the most malleable games out there, so whatever.
From what I saw and heard in the movie, I assumed the dungeon movements were being controlled by the red wizards.
I've never had a problem with multiple climaxes, in movies or otherwise 😂
I think the best characters to make a D&D movie are the monsters. Just make it about the weird, horrific and fantastic monsters. Build a roster of PCs that serve as the "human" heels to the real stars, MONSTERS! Make them generic enough to capture the D&D tropes, ground them in reality and make them face these otherwordly threats.
I had fun watching this movie and will see it again
Loved this movie, had such a great time. Ticked all the boxes of why I love DnD
I had a great time with this movie. Sad you didn't enjoy it.
It's well known by now that Bob Kane did NOT create Bat-Man. He's been stealing credit for years. Bill Finger is the main source.
I really enjoyed the film. The craziness was the expected craziness. No one (at least I don't) expect sense from the world. Seriously if you are expecting "magic" to be explained why watch any CGI movie beyond a few flicks like 2001 Space Odessy, The Expanse. Again it all goes back to expectations. Was it entertaining? Funny ? Over the top? Great Drama? Yes. Did LotR explain it's magic? Marvel Universe? You folks may want to readjust your lens. Seems to me like you walked in with your list of things to like and not like.
