Wait, this was actually supposed to be the Pollux system? Cool. Both Pollux and Canopus feature in some other great sci-fi as well. Both of those stars are pivotal in BattleTech (Mechwarrior), and Arrakis is supposed to be in the Canopus system
I always imagined that "Bug hunt" wasn't referring to literal bugs but equipment malfunction (false readings, false alarms. Etc).

Cool as this is, doesn't feel right given the marine's only mention of a bughunt incident. In Aliens it comes across as a waste of time and nothing to take seriously. The xenomorphs aren't given any respect and caution and if this fanfic mission was cannon they absolutely would have.

I think the Crew Chief of Colonial Marine drop ship ( Spunkmeyer ) survived the mission on LV426. He decided not to board the ship after putting his hand on an alien turd. After seeing the ship crash, he realized that he needed to hide. He found shelter in a cave which allowed him to also survive the blast from Hadley's Hope.
'Bug Hunt' is a solid collection. Alien life isn't exactly rare in the Aliens universe, it seems: various squads of Colonial Marines run into a lot of different hostile alien life in those shorts.
That said, I liked the Predator-focused collection 'If It Bleeds' better. A fair number of the Bug Hunt stories boil down to "Basically Aliens, but with different bugs, less-memorable Marines, and compressed to tell in twenty minutes instead of two-plus hours".

Next to 2001: A Space Odyssey, I've never seen a film with such a massive scope other than Prometheus!! By the way, if any readers have any suggestions, I've very anxious to hear about such a film…
