You’ll officially need to wait a full 56 days before you get to see the Nintendo Switch 2 in action. For all of us schlubs who won’t get to try it out in person at a “Nintendo Experience” event, we’ll all need to tune in early April 2 to get an idea of what the Switch 2 is capable of and—hopefully—find out what games will be worth playing before the long-awaited console finally hits store shelves.
Nintendo’s website now includes the exact timing for its April 2 Switch 2-centric Nintendo Direct. The showcase will start at 6 a.m. PT or 9 a.m. ET. We still don’t know exactly what Nintendo plans to talk about. Still, if it was anything like the Switch livestream in January 2017, the company could reveal the sequel Switch launch date and more technical details and share a few launch titles planned for Q2 this year.
Everything that has come after the Switch 2 reveal has been left up to the rumor mill, just as it was before Nintendo’s January teaser. The sequel Switch will have a larger screen, magnetically attached JoyCons, new sticks, and some other renovations to the classic thin Switch shell. A few preorder peripherals offer a better idea of the JoyCon’s motion control abilities.
So, back to the rumor mill, we go. Fans are still speculating about a scene from the teaser showing the JoyCons running along a table, indicating it could have mouse-like capabilities, perhaps with an in-built sensor. In an interview with IGN (via NintendoLife) Sid Meier’s Civilization VII executive producer Dennis Shirk said “the announcement had some great stuff in it. I love what they are doing with the controllers. It’s all very cool. That’s about all I can say about it in terms of opinion.”
Game developers have already had hands-on time with the console for the sake of porting their titles to the hardware so that they would know better than us. The developer for the mainstay PC series would be excited about mouse-like JoyCon capabilities. Such mouse-like capabilities would be like what Lenovo tried with its stick mouse mode on the Legion Go, though bad ergonomics made that feature useless. The company plans to include a similar feature in Legion Go 2.
While we all anticipate a new Mario Kart title launch alongside previously-announced games like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A, we will have to wait until after April 1 for more info (beware the April Fools pranks that will pervade the internet before the Switch 2 reveal).
At the very least, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa reconfirmed the console maker has a plan to deal with scalpers. The president told Japanese-language news site Nikkei (translated by VGC), “We will take all possible measures based on the experience we have accumulated to date (regarding scalpers and the like). We are making preparations.” While we still don’t know what Switch 2 entails, we should expect a lot of them to go around at launch.
