I think people just want Sonic Adventure 1-3 remade. A Sonic Game like frontiers is good but it's still not what people want at this very moment.
You forgot to mention something pretty crucial: it has a handholding system in place that essentially kills all speed as soon as you jump and holding the boost button is practically useless. This was only fixed on PC via the "Improved Physics" mod by BeatzYT. So even people who didn't play sonic until the Unleashed era/our gen who is now mid 20s aren't gonna like this unless if they remove the open world crutches installed in this game manually. Feels like they slapped together a bunch of ideas and crossed their fingers that it would mesh together well because they also hired a few bigger names to do the OST for this game. But a lot of things, mostly under the hood of this game just do not mesh well together. To me, this game was genuinely a joy to play, but I bought it on Steam cause I knew something was going to be wrong, like you cannot play a game now with a more scrupulous personality without having at least one or two mods installed nowadays, and for this game, it's unfortunately pop-ins and the physics.
So I'm literally playing the game and outside of pop in and a lil bit of jank here and there I'd say the game is far from being the worst and let alone a failure especially when it's gotten a overall positive reception and IS THE MOST SOLD SONIC GAME IN JAPAN so I respectfully disagree with this "review"
In my opinion a good sonic game is a sonic game that focuses on the bright colorful characters/environments and fast paced platforming gameplay. As a kid I loved sonic adventure because it had loads of cute colorful characters an enjoyable well structured colorful environment and lots of fun and entertaining well designed and well thought out platforming levels oh and a cracking soundtrack :D. If I was to of played this game as a kid, it likely would of been traded in at the gamestore within a week xD.
It feels like sega are forgetting there target audience which are children and sonic fans.
This game is just to boring bland and dull to be a sonic game. Why they thought this was a good idea is beyond me.

Great review! You have some valid criticisms, but I find myself enjoying the game. The only issues I have with the game is just the pop-in and the lack of a falling animation when running off a platform. And the fact that it's just 4 islands and not 5.
You can get a TON of air-time too, and it's just so satisfying.
But, I don't think anyone should compare Mario with Sonic. That's all from me.

As an OG sonic fan the open world just fills like filler content meant to pad out the playtime. The meat and potatoes of the game should of been the cyberspace levels. Games need to be original and stop trying to be breath of the wild.

I know right off the bat Spark the Electric Jester 3 was going to be better.
I still buy these games regardless of reviews cuz i still manage to have fun and occasionally find what ppl thought was bad in a game fun to me there were a few exceptions and in fact one of em was forces every time I played i felt bored for the 2 hours it took to beat it frontiers looks promising too me tho and apparently for the true difficulty you need hard mode idk how much harder it is but it might be something as for the world design yeah I agree tis a bit basic and the obstacles feel out of place for the most part but that’s what happens when sega pulls the holidays time crunch as per usual most of the effects we see with that is last two islands and the true final boss don’t blame the developers tho they want the fans to be happy but the corporate of sega refuses due to greed
