I always used gestures with my hands combined with the commands. When my former dog became 14 he got deaf but the gestures still worked. (and also my other dog (Both border collies) knew the search command so if the deaf one was to far away the younger one went out to get him.
The dog I have now is also for most deaf now (15) and I'm glad I also learned her hand signals. All dog never were on a leash until they became deaf. This is needed for their safety against traffic and because I live on a boat. A few weeks ago, at night and 3C temperature she fell into the water (this was the 2nd time in 2 years) , I had her out, thanks to the rope, in a few seconds. A friend who also lives on a boat but does not use a rope and lost his 15 year old dog a month ago. It fell in to the water at night and drowned because he could not get him fast enough. (the water is about 5 degrees C) That was very sad.

im sorry but my sister is a dog groomer and there no way in hell , anyone is gonna stand around giving there dogs treats while we are trying to groom the dog….we usually ask u to leave until we are 100% done cause if they hear the owner voice or see them , they start to get all crazy and want to go…so they are extremely tuff to groom with the owner in the lobby or right there….we actually have each other groom are dogs so they don't get all worked up with us(the owner ) being around.
I don't think it's only about body language. I think that animals feel energy and emotions. And some can smell when we have an ilness. Ever had a ''breath sniff check'' from a dog? Pretty sure it's not just about knowing what we ate. They're monitoring our health.

I think my dogs walk is like my social media time. They have to smell who was here, where did they go? What did they eat? And, definitely off leash time is important.
Never tease, let your dog show you their humor. If they like the feeling of laughter in the house? And, the dog has a sense of humor ( not d dry person has a sense of humor, neither does every dog) the dog will find a way to make you laugh, if they like your laughter.
But, I disagree about idle chatter yo your dog. My dogs have always responded to my chatter to them specifically to them (no one else around) using their name, just telling them about my day.
