Just think, the simplicity of this game at the time after living through blue, red, and yellow the excitement of exploring a new region with day and night being a kid and forcing myself to stay up late to catch night time pokemon chasing the legendary pokemon across the map and after all that to discover the Kanto region being unlocked and getting destroyed by Red! Best sequel of a pokemon game hands down!
Gold and Silver set the standard for sequels in Monster Collecting RPGs. Not only did it manage to balance new Pokemon with new evolutions and pre-evolutions among 100 new Pokemon, it introduced a number of Quality of Life Updates, showed a deep respect for those who played the first generation, and introduced the concept of a post-game which is to this day still unrivaled in terms of sheer amount of additional content. Most players still cannot fathom why we've never been allowed to visit previous regions in the Post Game the way we were allowed to with Gen 2. I'll never understand why Pokemon abandoned making Definitive Editions after Gen 4, either, because Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum were so freaking good it was unbelievable. Oh, well, HeartGold and SoulSilver remain the best Pokemon games in my opinion.
