I think you missed references to the USA cartoons. Standing Koopa Troopas with spears is unique to the Super Mario Bros Super Show cartoon from the 80s. The opening entrance of Bowser's ship is similar to the premise of Super Mario Bros 3 cartoon intro (although it is true that at least one of the later games opens the same way). Also referring to Bowser as King of the Koopas comes from the NES manual, and is otherwise relatively rare in the series. The USA cartoons of course emphasized his title much more than his proper name.
Plot? We know the plot already. "Using their new super powers, the Mario Brothers rescued Princess Toadstool, and beat back the evil Koopa army."

I feel like the first scene is showing us the process of bowser taking over the various kingdoms, in this case the snow kingdom. We always see that he’s conquered typically eight different kingdoms sometime before the time the game takes place, however we’ve never actually seen this process before.
