U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports into the United States in another move to support domestic production. Just last week, Trump imposed a 10% tariff on all Chinese imports to the U.S., adding to existing tariffs on China. Meanwhile, the president still threatens to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.
To put the trade debate into perspective, this graphic shows total U.S. imports by selected trading partners between 2017 and 2023 in billions of dollars. The data comes from the U.S. International Trade Commission and the International Monetary Fund.

Since Trump’s first term (2017–2021), China has lost its position as the top importer to the U.S. to Mexico. In 2023, the neighboring country to the south exported $476 billion to the U.S., compared to $427 billion from China and $421 billion from Canada.
Electronic products make up the largest share of U.S. imports (20.2%), followed by transportation equipment (15.1%) and chemicals (13.5%).
