The terminology is confusing. Neither the Spanish describe them as maya or the natives at the time self identified as maya. The Spanish are very specific of the name individual chief or “cacique”. It was important for them to know who was who in the region.
These people maybe were descendants of the maya civilization that collapsed several centuries before.
The name maya is a modern reference to a group of people that speaks similar languages that are believe to have an origin in the language from the Maya empire.

Its actually an account of the conquest, not a novel. Its a historical narrative. It is available FREE on line. The name and author: The Conquest of New Spain, Bernal Diaz. Historically it is an important book.
