I feel bad for people who played before the updates. I started playing after the momentum update and i gotta say that it's infinetly better now and if it wasn't for that, i'd ragequit faster than sonic can run 😅
This is such a cool ass idea for a series
I think a big reason for PS & Xbox players dropping off is probably because of the audience each console attracts.
Hardcore sobic fans from my observations are usually the strongest on PC and Nintendo. One offers mods and the other has the most sonic games on any platform…to date, even if you combined all of segas consoles together.
PS & Xbox players might have been more casual or newcomers who might've just had a harder time trying to understand what the game was trying to do, but that doesn't excuse frontiers if its actual issues..
Its just an observation that might shed some light on why the data came out the way it did
As someone who has gotten all acheivements and 100 percented the main story and side content and extra story I can indeed confirm that I have Played too much Sonic Frontiers.
This is a pretty bad idea for a series
I’m literally in my 500th hour
Interesting video, you could do a comparison between Frontiers and other Sonic games to see if it was below or above average
A lot of people buy games on sales and don't play them, but plan to do in the future. I think that affects the numbers.
How do you only have 422 subscribers?
After Playing on Pc with mods i cannot go back to Vanilla😩
Thought this was gonna be a schlocky video essay or something but no this is actually incredibly interesting take on finding out how objectively a game can capture and keep the attention of an audience.
Interesting watch I can see how the initial drop off with the tutorial might be because some people just don't want to bother getting used to the control scheme or control adjustments cuz they kind of just want something that plays similar to Mario or whatever.
As for the chaos Island drop off that might be more so because of the quality of the platforming segments taking a bit of a dip with how much 2D sections there that kind of become more obtrusive than helpful when exploring at times let alone the pinball challenge near the end. It's more smooth sailing after that really.
frontiers was a fire game. The problem was it was visually bland as fuck
Yea
i did play this game on my switch it was great much better then forces
Of course I can't really confirm that, so it's just my opinion, but I think that if we could see the statistics for Switch, the console would probably be behind Steam and slightly above Ps4, the profile of Sonic players is generally Nintendo (at least that's what it looks like looking at social networks in general).
I can't speak for everyone, but as someone who played almost 200 hours of Sonic Frontiers, mods help a lot in the survival of games of this type, and they weren't even mods as miraculous as these ported stages, they were simple things like improving the character's movement when jumping, playing with the characters from the expansion without the cyber effects and on the vanilla map, among other minor things.
Playstation players:Wow this game is awesome/mediocre/bad
45,2% of players:ZZZZZzzzzzz
How do you buy the game and don't play it.
Sonic frontiers was only sonic in story, gameplay was sonic skinned, making it not a true sonic game so I had no interested in playing, I watched story on YouTube
The big gap between Steam and console is that actual adult Gamers will buy this "kids game" with their hard earned money on steam for their hard earned PC..while parents will buy this "Kids game" for their kids on the console they bought them who care about nothing but Fortnite and Call of Duty. Most of this tiktok/mobile game/online match short attention span generation of kids AND adults no longer have the will to finish single player games like this whether they are good or not.
Dis shi interesting as hell, dafuq? This seems like a common occurrence around here, I'll be sure to stick around. Very good video.
I personally loved Frontiers, I had a lot of fun with it. I can see why some people quit at the pinball section, but the tutorial? What, y'all don't wanna learn how to play the damn game? I'm at a lost tbh, what happened?
I 100%d it on Xbox, not just all achievements, but 100%. Sad to see how few players even got all achievements on console. I bought it for steam as well, but really just for modding
I have 300 hours on this game on ps5
i played through the game first on switch and then bought the game on sale on steam, unfortunately by that time i realized i didnt really enjoy the game as much as i did before and i didnt really have a strong need to replay it when i played it on pc again, thats why i only got to the third island before getting tired, didnt help that denuvo ruined my time playing it again because of the random stuttering lol
I started playing this year. I'm still playing it rn
Perspective from someone who got all the achievements on Xbox and has also beaten the game on Steam and modded a bunch:
Chaos island is the worst one in the game. It is widely known that the level design and enemies are atrocious. Ouranos island isn’t bad and is better with the final horizon, but for the average player you can experience everything the game has to offer by beating island 2 and watching the rest of the story on YouTube.
Look, I loved frontiers, but I’m not shocked people didn’t finish it. It stops throwing worthwhile content at you after Ares besides the bosses
yes, i did, frick you
Yes. A lot of people played it. I think tiktok and shorts are a big reason as to why people have such minuscule attention span. Insert a small dull moment or tutorial and they disconnect. Sad honestly
Yes.
🎀 I definitely feel like the absolute DELUGE of tutorial messages and stops, and random loading into the training simulator, are to blame for the massive drop in retention at the start.
Also, this is a pretty damn cool channel, never seen a consept like this breaking down player retention by milestone
I 100% the game and I can honestly say it is not that great of a game but as a fan it was the best game in the past decade. Also we hoped Sega learned and are willing to improve for future games.
First ever game I preordered, worth it and ended up being one of my favorite games of all time now, I can't express how early I supported this one before it even had a name and I heard the next Sonic game was being developed. I beat it after a good few months, did everything possible and hundred percent the items and achievements, and now every few weeks I look to see what new mods people have made and enjoy those now, THEY STRAIGHT UP MAKE ENTIRE NEW GAMES! New levels, characters, sonic riders mods, physics, animations, it's one of the most fun games I've enjoyed in quite a while. I enjoyed it to the fullest until I decided to beat it and then once I beat it then I felt fine using mods to enjoy it and that's what's keeping it afloat now the creativity of the average Sonic fan being insane sometimes.
I think the big drops and lower percentages on consoles might be because people play the Switch version more. I've noticed that with quite a few titles that release on all platforms, the Switch version tends to perform a lot better despite the communities being pretty evenly spread across all platforms. And honestly, I think this makes the most sense goven that the switch port of frontiers, while significantly weaker in terms of actual quality, is about 20-30 dollars cheaper. With the price of the switch version sitting at at about 29.99 while the xbox and playstation versions are 69.99. Also, steam typically has lower prices aswell. Plus, there's usually a much bigger modding community on steam, so yeah. I think this data is just skewed cause Nintendo doesn't participate in the milestones thing. It might've actually been more successful than what's suggested here, and we just don't know cause the data isn't collected.
I love this!
This just randomly got recommended to me and I feel like this series is just an excuse to shit on a game and the people who liked it based on how long they played it
If it weren't for the updates & Spindash, i wouldn't have logged as many hours as i did in frontiers.
i saw someone on stream stop playing around the first set of activities in Kronos after you get the first emerald and it kinda shows how slow at times or how much is in the way of getting to the core of the game. replays/speed runs kind of drag because of the mandatory story content that's just meh or a random puzzle/ mini game to sit through to unlock the next guardian. Hopefully next game they have a stronger opening/tutorial to the open zone & a stronger sense of exploration and direction for new players. i think they nailed the type of open zone content with update 3 with the platforming and the action chain challenges. i prefer they focus more on that and condense a couple things like the different collectibles.
yes i did and thoroughly enjoyed it actually
I 100% every island and then I accidentally deleted my save lol
When it comes to Sonic games the PC version is the one people will play the most because of mod support. The modding community for Frontiers is huge on Game Banana, rivaling Generations ' PC mod scene.
i did
I got every achievement on steam. (And if Nintendo switch had achievements, I would probably have all of them there, too.)
I don't know if achievement data is really an accurate reflection.
Some thoughts…
1: Do achievements take into account if the player played the game multiple times for a specific player? Like, Do I count as three players if I have three save files (for whatever game)?
2: Do achievements statistics delete when you delete the game. Say, I beat the entire game but then delete everything (I don't care about gamer participation trophies), does my data stay on the server? If I just delete my game? If I start it up and it crashes so I never go further (this has happened a few times) do I still count?
Side Note: Also, you say you want to give an objective analysis but you bring a lot of subjective information. You might want to put all the subjective information as part of the info (such as review scores) and then go into the data as the main body of work so that the subjective information is separate from the objective data. This would help the flow of information work better.
Honestly, ever since I completed the game once, the only reason i replay it at all is because of the guardians and titans, maybe to explore the Islands a bit, because the cyberspace stages just don't feel as good as they could truly be. The major issue about it is the quite honestly limited mobility and options available (ex. Unable to stomp until you touch the floor, something that never happened in previous boost titles).
I basically replayed the game five times at this point, four counting each DLC release, and once at Extreme Difficulty for challenge's sake… And boy oh boy, Frontiers has many downs to be honest. It's fun, yeah… But it is not enjoyable in a long term run for replayability.
I have only 296 hours on steam, but I'm not playing with any mods besides combat revamp mods. I think the modding scenario explain the statistics. Too bad SEGA wanted to release the game to a mid console and had to compromise the quality of the game.
I played steam version, I have 112 hours in game
