I have never played the game, and was worried I wouldn’t get it going in but I had a good time with this movie as a comedic take on medieval fantasy films. A lot of the humour and jokes hit for me, the action was fun, and I enjoyed the characters. I appreciated that the movie was very accessible to a new comer like me and happy I walked out with a smile on my face.
Yeah the whole “we love to emasculate men”…that turned me away from the wanting to see the movie. They may have claimed it wasn’t for woke crap but heres the problem. Thats still a woke writing thing. But I’ll admit it seemed to look a bit better and more dnd than that 1st movie that came out years ago. Then again Wrath Of The Dragon God and 3rd movie The Book Of Vile Darkness were definitly better than the 1st movie. Well the movie crew added the half-races in the movie before WOTC stupidly deemed half-races as racism. Yeah even I knew the Druid girl shouldn’t even be able to become an Owlbear as part of the Druid wildshape ability. But yeah If Chris Pine was suppose to be a Bard then well what the hell was the point of him being one then? But in the end I will never give WOTC anymore money.
Aw, Man! So sorry you had to re-record, Mister James. I know that's a pain in the ass.
I'm gonna pretty much echo your sentiments for the movie. It wasn't a smash, but I enjoyed it. The pace FELT like a game session and the actors came off like slightly unhinged players. I enjoyed that and it DID leave me wanting a sequel, so that's a point in its favor.
I found some of it cringeworthy, particularly the wood elf village looking like a Portland coffee shop, and every other group of gnomes, elves, and halflings looking like the clientele of an international traveler's club. Since there was no cultural cohesion with any of the non-human races, the whole social fabric of the movie felt…BLURRED to me. With the "Lord of the Rings" movies, they made you VERY aware that you were looking at elves, not some patchwork coat of colors made from earth culture stand-ins. And the black Elminster seriously ground my gears.
As for Edgin, I didn't actually see him as a member of the Bard class. To me, he came off as a Rogue with the Mastermind subclass and the Entertainer background. And I just explained away Doric's druid rulebreaking as some sort of magic items we weren't seeing.
All in all, I like it and will watch a sequel. I'm particularly excited about what they'll continue to do with the Red Wizards of Thay. I just hope they tone down the woke "United Colors of Benneton" feel.
