Here's the thing about 'purists,' they're wrong.
Whether or not people realize it, we really don't want the same exact type of game over and over again. Franchises that rinse & repeat get stale (vintage Sonic games, Mega Man, Tomb Raider). There are many examples. What we really want is innovation. Nintendo have been pros at this since the beginning. They have consistently changed their franchises significantly from one game to the next. This is a brilliant move. People might think they want OoT style games forever, but believe me when I say we would get tired of that formula. I don't care how good it is – it gets stale.
BotW is a classic forever, Tears is just Breath X10 and a classic in it's own right.
I can't wait to replay both BOTW and TOTK on the Switch 2 (hopefully they'll have some form of enhancement patches, if not, i'll still give them another play through!)
Breath of the Wild has been a top Zelda game for me since it was released. It ties with Ocarina of Time in second place. A Link to the Past is my absolute favorite Zelda game. Tears of the Kingdom ranks under the original Legend of Zelda, Twilight Princess, and Wind Waker. I just started a new playthrough of Breath of the Wild after putting the game down for a couple of years, and maybe I’m getting old, but there’s so much to explore that I just don’t remember from prior playthroughs. In that way, it still feels fresh!
When I think about replaying Tears of the Kingdom, I think about how amazing the opening of the game is, and how you’re immediately invested in the story. Then I remember how, after that, the game is terribly grindy until you reach the end. Even though it finishes just as strong as it opens, the middle part of the game just isn’t fun enough to offset the amount of grind and fetch.
Subbed 🎉much love from Vancouver Canada 😊I’m excited for the retrospective 😮
There's just something about playing botw the first time. There's nothing like it seeing hyrule castle in the distance while at a tower or at a enemy camp its so intimidating. Yes it had flaws but what game doesn't?
I cant for the life of me understand how this game's numerous shortcomings are so incredibly overlooked or justified… it baffles me…
Problem is the story is just worse the only reason botw got so much praise cause it was on a handheld console and looked amazing for what crappy graphics the switch had.
Nintendo are masters at optimization. Botw was beautiful, captivating and so fun to explore and get lost into, but the moment you start getting close to beat the game you are just like oh, that was it? The divine beasts could of been so much better I'm sorry but totk story alone and gameplay are so much better it's not close. The only thing botw has that totk doesnt is that feel of you are actually out by yourself, in the wild that sense of curiosity and wonder what could be behind this mountain even if in reality it was so much open space and perfect ambience.
Hey man! Love this game with all my heart, and I love your content around it. Keep doing what you’re doing. I hope I see your channel blow up soon
I just started playing this nov 2024, now i can't let go, it's the only i play now😅
The point in your life when a game like Breath of the Wild comes out can also have a big impact on your perception of it. I grew up on Nintendo, playing with my younger brother; we both played through Ocarina of Time together, etc. In 2005 I built my own gaming PC and got into MMOs and other games. Then in 2011 I got married, and we didn't bother getting a Wii U right away since I still had Gamecube and Wii games to play, along with PC games.
Then I saw the Switch reveal and presentation in 2017 and it was amazing to see. I remember wishing they made a portable SNES back in the day and here was an HD home console that was also portable. I somehow got a pre-order, then my wife ended up in the hospital for mental health for a couple of weeks. I was finally able to bring her home the same day the Switch launched, and the next day was my 37th birthday. I had considered selling the Switch on ebay because we were broke, but my wife said I should keep it since it was my birthday, and I'm so glad I did. This was the first console I ever bought for myself on day 1, and being a part of the experience from the beginning was awesome, especially playing Breath of the Wild.
I'm still playing through that original save file because I take my time and don't want it to end, and the Switch just had so many games, I couldn't keep up. I'm working on the Tarrey Town quest and then I have all of Death Mountain to finish before I go for Ganon.
It's refreshing to see praise for this game again. Idk why people started hating but for along time this was the gold standard for games in general and virtually everyone agreed.
Just started my second playthrough of BotW, and I'm loving it! I'm surprised at how little from TotK I miss.
BOTW's exploration is so good. Ultimately they made a mistake using the same map in TOTK, imo.
Great video. Just subscribed? Are you from Belfast by any chance? I recognise the Northern Ireland accent. I’m in Armagh. It’s so good to listen to a review as if you’re giving a professional presentation not like many YouTubers that are trying too hard to be funny and it’s hard to listen and watch. You got straight to the point!
I’ve put 200hrs into totk and haven’t played botw yet. I have story completed and majority of shrines and quests done but I’m really wanting to jump on to botw. I’m attracted to the simplicity of it. Thinking of playing it with no hud and no YouTubing. Full immersion.
BOTW is amazing …
I loved playing the old Zelda games but I didn't like the idea of durability so I skipped this one. I finally got that itch to play and bought both, but I didn't like how it ran on the Switch and I had just got a beefy new PC. I have to say, the experience is SO much better 4k 60 fps. The games look great on Switch but honestly emulating the game with a high end PC makes it become one of the most beautiful games I ever played, I think the art style makes it look even better than Cyberpunk.
This is a great video! Talking as a gamer who has put nearly 1.4 thousand hours into Elden Ring, I played Breath of the Wild for the first time on my new Switch Lite just before Christmas (2023), and it is insane how much Elden Ring has drawn from this game. I never knew just how enormous this game (and Tears of the Kingdom) is. Indeed, people talk of the success of Elden Ring with its freedom in the open world as well as its intricate level design and bosses, but the puzzle elements of these open world Zelda games are such great use of the physics and mechanics. And between the dungeons/puzzles are enormous open spaces filled with activity whether it be collecting resources to expand your inventory, taking out enemy camps using the host of creative means the game provides or collecting the lost memories that form the main substance of its charming story. And all of this is totally open to player choice, as soon as you step off the walls of a cracking tutorial area (easily with 5-6 hours of content/secrets on the Great Plateau alone). I've now finished Breath of the Wild (story/memories at least) after 130 hours and am now almost 100 hours into Tears of the Kingdom. These games have me totally hooked and I had been ignorant of their significance towards Elden Ring's success. Liked and subbed! 🗡️⚔️
I'm gonna be honest, the switch and wiiu emulator ran it at 60. If it doesn't for free on switch 2 I'm gonna just emulate it. How can any consumer who cares about themselves and others choke down having to pay on top of the hardware upgrade when it natively could just run it in engine.
I liked and subbed. Keep going my guy. 🤜
Watched, enjoyed, subscribed. I've over 700 hours playtime between Breath and Tears yet never flurry rush nor shield parry. Yet l don't worry about it. If I could only choose one, it would be….Breath. But only just. I adore the sense of isolation and discovery, whereas Tears has loads more to do. Basically, I'm glad they both exist as I love them (almost) equally.
Have you ever done a "straight to Ganon" run in BotW? If not, that would be a fun video. It's super hard, but doable. If I can do it, you definitely can! lol
I wish I could replay BOTW but add in all the wells & caves from TOTK.
I got my switch for Christmas 2023 with totk, I put about 50 hours in and decided to buy botw as I felt I needed to play the first game. Still go back and fourth between the two but I need to finish botw first 😅
Both games are always awesome to get back into.
2025 and first time botw player… i love it , fun to play .. immersive.. just love it
They really missed the opportunity to really milk BOTW until he's really dry by adding constant dlc 🫤
