We're getting closer and closer to building our house and can't wait for all our cats to have a much larger area to run around and play in! (Not to mention a yard!!! In Japan!!! We're so grateful for the land we found!) Every time I think Pichi has reached her limit with us she continues to open up even more. At this point I expect that eventually she'll be openly accepting pets and cuddles from everyone! Even with our other cats, none of them really liked being pet until they reached 3-ish years old, and Pichi is still well under that, anyway. I'm so proud of her progress, and so glad she found a companion in Poki!

I love that Pichi is becoming such a tough girl. I remember when Poki was first introduced and was the only one to match Haku's energy. It's so cool to see that while Pichi is still new that she's not afraid to stand up for herself.

I had a feral angora cat that I brought into my cat family. She needed lots of dental care, and it was shocking $$, but it was spent. I paid the vet over 6 months, and she healed. I had to pill her daily for a few months afterward, and I am still awed that I did it, and she let me. Somehow, we negotiated.
Over time I found out she was highly intelligent, and that she very selectively CHOSE to cooperate with me (you'd have to know the cat to know what I mean—and also know catkind in general, which at this point, I do—each cat is its own world, just like a person). I was even able to trim her nails after a year or so, and believe me, this quicksilver cat, trapped at four months, was as wild as a bird. But she needed the care so badly, having been born into a feral cat colony with severe stomatitis in her jaw, and the intervention helped her live a long, otherwise healthy life. Somehow, she got through the terror and pain, and dealt with it—and me, and my other three cats.
She was with me all her post-rescue life—just short of 17 years. She did things at her own pace, and she became my alpha, although she was so slender and small! Having her love and trust—cautiously but definitely given—was a great compliment. I miss her so much. I still have the long scars on my hands from when she was very young and I hadn't learned her, or she me, quite yet. Painfully, we worked it out. I look at these scars fondly now, for they are permanent reminders, like tattoos, of that beloved, brave cat.
For just about any human but me, all her years, she was usually a total ghost. Only showed herself to me… but if she made an exception, meaning you came by often and you weren't loud or ever abrupt in your movements, she expected you to totally ignore her as she spent many minutes checking you out, circling where you sat. And you never touching her, but she would touch you—brush you with her feathery tail. But you must never touch back! Ever! I could—no one else. Made life interesting. She did things her own way and made mischief with the other cats, to amuse herself. Would never give ground to the other ones (one was a crabby asthmatic, weighing 17 lbs and built like a tank).
She seamlessly became an indoor cat as soon as I got her. To my relief, she never seemed to want to go out again. After a while she slept behind my head at night, on my pillow. And although she had an intense startle response, she never hurt me during my sleep… I actually think she guarded me. (I would think migod, a feral cat on my head. Am I an idiot? Have I lost my mind completely? What if—? Oh, what do I need both eyes for. Go to sleep…).
It worked out fine. Who knows why.
Her name was Pouf Lafleur. I told people she was French Canadian and only spoke French and didn't like to mingle. It was northern Vermont, so they weren't that surprised. Accepted it. Made a real mystique for my brat. (A Froot Loop like me with weird, beautiful cats gets forgiven for a lot.)
