I love the XCOM computer games so when I played the board game recently I didn't mind the timed turn aspect to the phases of the game (even though I usually don't like apps to be a part of board games). My biggest problem with this game are the "Vigilo Confido" dice which decide anything meaningful, essentially a D6 die with only 2 sides relevant. The thing I always loved about the XCOM computer games is the variety of choice from what to research, building your base, alien autopsies etc. In this game no matter who you assign to a mission, no matter what you research to benefit your squad any meaningful choice you make as a team it's all decided by the same bullshit dice. It would be so much better if it were a standard D6 and say a roll of 4,5 or 6 was a success and lower rolls had other values that resulted in negative consequences.

Great review. I don't think this game will be a good fit in my group. If there's just one role that doesn't resonate well then this game will never hit the table again because you'll always have that one fool at the table who has to play this role.

My impression is very much that XCOM is really a three-player game, and the Central Officer was spun out of the other roles (notably, the Commander) just to pad the player count to four.

I find the app perfect as it is
At around 3:00 you explained soldiers being assigned to enemy tasks. Your explanation isn't correct here (as I understand the rules…).
You say that the circle with the yellow square must have a soldier with the same icon assigned. But all the circles must be matched (yellow square or not). You may use one soldier per icon (yellow square or not), but no more.
If both the soldier and the task has a circle with a yellow square, then you get an additional die.
So:
– White circle on task, white circle on soldier = 1 die
– White circle on task, white circle with yellow square on soldier = 1 die
– White circle qith yellow square on task, white circle on soldier = 1 die
– White circle qith yellow square on task, white circle with yellow square on soldier = 2 dice
And elite status = 1 additional die. So an elite soldier with a specialization matching the task gives you 3 dice.
You two allways have such great reviews. This one even made me doubt whether this app-thing is really such a bad thing.

I got to play this with a good group and quite enjoyed it. It is very very intense and that does not suite a lot of groups.
I love XCom, the video game, but will have to pass on the board game. It does sound like a lot of fun, but I know for a fact most my gaming group would not be interested at all and this game would have to be pulled out more than once a year to reach optimal enjoyment. But with all that said, if I find it for a really good price…
