IMPORTANT UPDATE ON THE GAME: Just to let you all know, its been brought to my attention that the game has received some updates which fix a few of the issues that I had with the game. They added full-auto firing mode, increased movement speed while firing AND removing those damn mines from the train level. They also added a cel-shaded mode to make it look a bit more like the older games and increasing the damage of the Demolition Shots.
I haven't tried these updates myself as my review was produced before they went live. I generally review games "at launch" due to the fact that "at launch" is when they take your money. That said, free improvement and additions are always welcome.

It's clear that this video was made before the first update that dropped two weeks after its release, since they not only added in a Full-Auto mode that you can toggle mid-gameplay, but also made a number of improvements like increasing movement speed while firing and removing the mines from the train level. The second update added a Cell-Shaded mode to make it look more like the older games while increasing damage output for Demolition Shots.
This is an absolutely crazy looking game 🤦🏾♂️ I remember seeing it as a kid in the early 2000s in some game stores for ps2, was always intrigued but forgot about it for years. Maybe a pinch when it’s on sale but 🤷🏾♂️ do you prefer anime type games or just any of an action genre ?
I only played the 1st game on PS2 and this game seems to sticking too close to the original as you said in the review.
I also watched the anime series. It's a nice gangster drama story but feels pretty disconnected with the game because of slow-pacing and pretty somber tone. Also, the main character became the character as we see in the veeery briefly in the series.
I'll wait for a sale for this one. It has the U.I of a Devil May Cry game but not the performance. I did try and play the original but the controls put me off. Its that weird stiff character control feel that I don't like. As you said Evil West does look better to me, as I'm not a fan of Gungrave as I don't know anything about it so the game doesn't have someone like me in mind. But if I see it on sale I'll take a look. I agree with you, The Evil West does look the better game.

Underwhelming? Whatever. Fact is, I'm not noob enough to dismiss the toughest game as of late.
