Is it not possible that the universe is an ever changing size, repeatedly expanding and contracting but not to an end point?
We only know of the expanding part simply because our view into the past and our species' existence is limited to a certain period where the expanding cycle can be 10 times longer before it contracts again.
Another way to picture this is the universe just breathing.
This can make up for the unknown parts such as dark energy and even correctly formulate the theory of everything.
