I just adopted a full grown dog who has no stairs experience. Doesn't help that she wiped out when she tried them, she tried to hop up them and lost footing. So now I'm dealing with a phobia too. I might have to find some wider tread stairs with good traction to see if I get get her to learn how to navigate. And then move her to my narrower slicker stairs.

I have tried to trained mochi, bugoy and Tiffany ("my pet dogs") how to climb upstairs and walk downstairs but they are panicking and got a nervous 😔😢
If you really love your short legged dog, build a ramp over the stairs. Even for some dog breeds with an 'in born' ability to climb stairs, it doesn't mean they are not at risk for future health problems which requires expensive surgery by specialized veterinarians. Some large dog breed such as German Shepherd could have this problem after a few years, if they are exposed to stair climbing activity when they are less than 18 months old.
Or if you or your high risk dog/puppy still insist on using the stairs, start saving money $,$$$ for veterinary treatment (surgery) for Hip Dysplasia (no cure, only pain relief) or Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) in a few years.
Mine doesn't put his back legs up tho he just basically bellyflops up to grab the treats 😑
Why you are holding a stick in your hands
We inherited a senior standard poodle(7 yrs old) I bought one of those lure sticks. I tried it. But not necessarily the lure stick what made it work somewhat, but putting the snacks on each step. But I had to lift his back paws up to get him to step up. It's a painful process. Not perfect but I know it's going to take more than one session to get him to actually walk up without me lifting his paws step by step.
This gives me hope!
You don’t have to train your dog to walk up stairs😭😭. After watching you go up the stairs so many times they’ll eventually follow. Both my dogs caught on in like 3 months
