I find it very likely that Membrane isn’t just any runaway Irken, but actually the original creator of much of the Irken technology we see in the show. This would explain how he’s able to create new tech out of nowhere, and has such competence in every major scientific field.
Given the outfit, it’s likely he was once a very high-ranked member of the Irken Empire, possibly even their chief scientist given how little their technology seems to have evolved since his departure. All of it still uses his operating system and doesn’t seem to be more advanced than his own creations.
Another detail is from ETF. His prosthetic arms could be from a shark related incident, or Membrane could possibly be a more normal Irken height, using a mechanical exo-suit to be a more human height.

But if Prof. Membrane is an alien due to his lack of a nose and ears, and Dib is a genetic clone of him, then why does Dib clearly have a nose and two ears? Also, in the episode where we see rain water burning Zim’s skin upon physical contact, why doesn’t Dib’s skin get burned too?

well I highly agree with u on most points (glad someone else saw through to this) but if Membrane were an alien that means his parents were to? In the IZ comics there is a Christmas special edition where membrane looks back to his past as a young child before and after his famous "hating Santa" incident. His mother (who looks most like him/dib) and father (who has the same hai style as Gaz) are seen in the background of the flashback (wishing they never "lied" about there being a real Santa) and on a photo. Dib and Gas are most definitely clones of the professor (bc there was a leak on a canceled episode and bc they have the same looks as the grandparents) but not aliens (well the professor isn't.. maybe.. unless his parents are as well since they both don't have noses or ears..) Membrane does have this "not care about alien life" attitude which is us (especially since he is seen in one of my fave scenes where zim and him are drinking tea in the kitchen) I do believe there is some Irked DNA in Dib & Gas that's for sure! if you read this yay! hope u reply winking robot emoji
