I adopted a 5 months old cat, 8 years ago, and it was instant love. He jumped in my arms and fell asleep in my top and he was purring a lot but he didn't knead at all. I had never seen this in a cat. Still, he was very happy. He surprised me when he started kneading at 4 years old and he still does 😊
But my cat kneads with her CLAWS. When I go to bed and she joins me, she will knead me with her claws extended. It hurts! I routinely double the blanket over my stomach, so she can knead freely without hurting me.
When my cat kneads my thigh, that's her way of letting me know she wants me to rub her in the bedroom.

I think it's a comfort move, they feel safe, loved and protected. Especially if your petting them on their favorite areas. Timmy loves his Tummy rubbed ,purrs loudly kneading his big paws, he's just so happy. Then there are the girls, Bunny and Mariah. They love my lap paw kneading alot. And purring too. 😻🐾🐾🐈⬛
My cat, Cowboy, likes to kneed on me. He gives me back massages. He also practices his umm romantic skills on me as well. He will mount the Mommy Mountain, hold my ultra snuggly fleece blanket in his mouth and do his thing…he's been neutered since 3three and a half months old.
My neutered male cat kneads fleece blankets (sometimes on their own, and sometimes when they're draped over my feet), my pink flamingo slippers, and my feather boas. He gets such pleasure from this kneading, that he gets an erection, after which, he wants to be brushed and petted.

I’m in a rather abusive relationship with my cat, his really extra intense kneading often draws blood and breaks skin. It’s not normal kneading, either, it’s very slow and controlled. His body language is ultra relaxed, though, so it’s confusing.

My cat Major isn't big on contact kneading ,he seems to understand that claws are painful .Instead he does something I call bunny paws .He rolls on his back ,folds his front paws the way a rabbit does when it's sitting on it's haunches ,then slowly flexes them up and down .He only does this when he's very happy and relaxed ,usually if i'm petting and talking to him .The next step is usually head bumps and a request for snacks ,happiness seems to go straight to his belly …lol .Wendy Langcake .
