I always find it interesting that people who go to areas who go to these places but have no knowledge at all of any hauntings never see anything strange. Just people who know the old stories see things. I think it is all in their imaginations.

Ghost Riders in the Sky is supposed to be based on a cattle drive that was deliberately driven over a homestead completely destroying it and killing the family that lived there. The people involved all met early deaths and they were seen continuing their trail drive.

In the Witcher universe The Wild Hunt is also seen as spectral beings seen throughout time. However, in truth they’re Elves from another word that come through our world to hunt for the Child of The Elder-Blood. The Elves purposely wear black clad armour to scare those who may see them on their journeys.

I'm very surprised that you didn't mention surely the most famous "phantom army" – the one resulting from the Battle of Edgehill, the first battle in the English Civil War.
Ghostly re-enactments of the battle were seen in the sky above Edgehill for several months after the battle.

I had a strange experience when visiting the site of the battle of New Orleans while on a school trip. I was walking alone along a path towards some of my friends about 100 yards away. Suddenly I started smelling burnt gunpowder. I didn't hear or see anything, but I could smell gunpowder.
