I have to say Square Enix has made another masterpiece.
I wouldn't be surprised some people who développement of Final Fantasy X had something to do with this game.
The battle system is almost exactly the same except in this one you don't see the turn order which is smart because you have to be far more tactical because you don't know what's coming.
At super strong monsters ir's quite tactocal and challenging.
Every skill are useful at any point of the game.
The smaller heals are still useful because you can save mp. Monsters are no joke so buffs and debuffs are key to winning battues including non-boss envoûters.
Turn based battles really stopped me buying this gane! I hate the constant stpp start nsture of these TB battles where you tske a few steps then you have swiych to another mechanic of the game – ehich put me odf FF7 on PS1, which battles becane far to offten abd then the grinding.
i played it quite a while on switch then gave up and sold.. but now tempted to grab again
I got into Dragon Quest out of sheer boredom and just looking for something new. I found Dragon Quest VIII for PS2 pretty cheap at GameStop and was addicted to the series ever since.
Eliminating random encounters was the best new mechanic, the insane encounter rate was my sole critique of part 8. I prefer the alchemy pot to the forge, combining objects at random as opposed to requiring a recipe…
I just picked this up for 8 quid , talk about a steal. Looking forward to playing this bad boy at the weekend 🙏

so happy this is free on microsoft game pass. looking forward to my first full dragon quest game. i have 7 and 8 on 3ds, and they look good as well.
The thing that kind of put me off of the game when I first tried playing it was it felt like all you did was go to a new area, go to the town, get a quest to go to the local cave, kill the bad guy, go back to town and move on. Over and over. It didn't feel like an open world like what people said, just… open, kind of repetitive stages? But maybe it opens up more?
IX is my very favorite, then V, then XI, then VIII.
