I think the engineers were originally a subservient race to the space jockeys. After the Jockey's went extinct the engineers tried to take their place and mimicked their former masters look and technology.
Notice that the ship looks like a Stage 2 xenomorph, the worm shaped face hugger?
I just figured it was a redesign later when they wanted to go that direction. Unless something comes out im going with that.
Personally I think that the "Space Jockey" is indeed an "Engineer" albeit of a different class as is the ship he is piloting.
I believe that the ship would be something along the lines of a hub that in factis capable of co-ordinating the operations of a fleet of other ships, or drone vessels. Taller, bulkier, more durable, probably with augmented intelligence to fulfill the mission perameters.
If the Engineers enjoy building bio-mech, there is no valid reason to discount their tampering even with their own species.
This is, of course, just an opinion.

I'm always excited to see people also of the same mindset on this topic. Thoroughly enjoyed your video. One note though, moreso toward the Engineers, it appears in Alien Covenant that the remains of the Engineers there are smaller and closer to human scale than even the Engineers in Prometheus. I could be absolutely wrong on that and it could just be a trick on my eyes. However, it's a thought. I also like the thought that the Engineers didn't create the Xenomorph, only simply replicated/recreated the preexisting design.

Well.. retcons upon retcons, so who knows what the original backstory was supposed to be?
I personally think the space jockey is a subspecies or a sub variant of the engineers, or a genetically modified super soldier of the engineers, or it could be a seperate rival faction of the same species, like the super predators/bad bloods and the normal predators. As for the ship, well if the guy was a subspecies of the engineers or a genetically modified super soldier, the vessel could be a modified version of the juggernaut to suit his massive size and height, if he was part of a rival faction, the ship could be based off of the juggernaut but modified using the technology of the rival faction, just like how to super predators modified and potentially upgraded existing predator tech to suit their needs and requirements. But idk, I could be complete wrong here, feel free to criticise with evidence I guess…
I suppose there is a much simplier explanation – prometheus has no connection to alien franchise. R. Scott just used concepts, similar for audience to sell different story made by his own. He simply does not cares about alien origin, because he was not an author. Even in a covernant movie he was forced by studio to add "alien" word to the title, and he categorically did not want to do this.

I think it’s a simple case of irregular design continuity. Building an alternative story based on such irregularities is interesting but highly unlikely.
I didnt know engineers technology doesnt progress over the eons. Only humans go from building pyramids to advanced technology. But the engineers are too stupid to have their technology change over time. Strange. Even though their shapes, sizes and textures are almost the same. Very strange

In the role-playing game the possibility is raised that the Space Jockey is not an engineer, but rather a previous species. Engineers would have copied their technology and aesthetics.
Also at the end of the video game Dark Descent it is seen that they are another species.
Common Sense, if Engineers created Human Race, why are they so ugly? Directors failure!

this is just another continuity issue and everything being dropped by scott when making prometheus.
Maybe the Space Jockey is a bio engineered pilot made by the engineers so they don't need a pilot and navigators awake and present.
