Sony has raised the price of the PlayStation 5 in some markets

Sony is hiking the price of the PlayStation 5 in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, EMEA, and the United Kingdom.

The Japanese company said the decision was made in response to a “challenging economic environment.”

“With a backdrop of a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates, SIE has made the tough decision to raise the recommended retail price (RRP) of the PlayStation 5 console in select markets in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Australia and New Zealand,” reads a blog post.

The PS5 Digital Edition will increase by €50 in Europe to €499.99. In the UK, the same console will now retail for £429.99—an upswing of £40.

In Australia, the cost of the PS5 Digital Edition will increase to AUD $749.95 from $649.95. The standard PS5 with disc drive will now retail for $829.95—up from $799.95.

The final pricing surge will take effect in New Zealand, where the PS5 Digital Edition and standard PS5 with disc drive will now cost NZD $859.95 and $949.95, respectively.

Sony noted that consumers in the EMEA region may also be asked to pay more for hardware, but neglected to provide concrete pricing information online.

The PS5 Pro RRP currently remains unchanged. Sony has also lowered the price of its external disc drive accessory.

Sony previously announced sweeping price hikes in August 2022 citing “challenging economic conditions.”
