Sony recently announced that the PS5 Slim Digital Edition would be undergoing a major price hike in the UK, Europe and other regions, adding £40 to the cost of the disc drive-less console.
Sony broke the news on April 13, giving PlayStation fans one day’s notice to pick up the cheapest PS5 before the price change came into effect on April 14.
“With a backdrop of a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates, SIE has made the tough decision to raise the recommended retail price (RRP) of the PlayStation 5 console in select markets in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Australia and New Zealand”, explained Sony in a blog post.
This price hike adds £40 to the total cost of the PS5 Slim Digital Edition, taking the RRP from £389.99 to £429.99 in the UK. Before the Slim, there was the original PS5 Digital Edition which launched for £359.99 in 2020. This means the console has undergone a £70 price increase in the past five years.
With April 14 having passed, the PS5 Slim Digital Edition price hike has officially come into effect. However, there are still a handful of places selling the console at a discount for a limited time.
