Gemini for Android Auto could be the biggest news from Google I/O

Google has confirmed plans to announce a version of its Gemini AI platform for use with Android Auto.

Confirming the technical sessions for its Google I/O conference next month, including more on Android XR, Android 16 for TV, new Google Pay and Wallet features, new UX tools via Material 3 Expressive.

However, in the sessions for developers, news of a Gemini in-car preview and other in-car app experiences stood out.

In an announcement post for app makers (via 9to5Mac), Google writes: “Preview Gemini in-car, with seamless navigation and personalised entertainment. Build next-gen in-car app experiences for Android Auto, cars with Google built in, and Android Automotive OS, and check out new tools and updates for streamlined development and distribution.

“Find out how to create immersive game and video experiences, get updates on car app quality tiers, and see our vision for Car App Library. Learn about the Car Ready Mobile Apps Program to deploy rapidly via Google Play.”

Gemini could be exceedingly useful for drivers with the best Android phones who are looking to find a nearby gas station that’s still open, or to read out the user’s latest messages.

In theory it’d be possible to ask Gemini to ‘take me home via the fastest route and avoid tolls’ or seek out a specific episode of a podcast. You could ask it to find roadside attractions or ideal places to stop halfway home for a break, or interesting landmarks to look out for on the drive.

Opinion

This is one of those scenarios where an AI infusion would be genuinely helpful.

I have a long drive ahead of me on Monday from Gatwick back to Shropshire. I’m not the most confident driver and the scenarios laid out about seem like they’d be genuinely useful for helping me navigate my way home safely without the distraction of prodding away at the in-car display.

We’ll see what Google announces at I/O next month. The developer conference begins on May 20.
