I think the wild men are survivors of the destruction that plunged a past civilization into the stone age. Who knows what kind of treatment they received at the hands if the other survivors, such that for one reason or another those didn't like or accept them as brothers or fellow humans. By seeking refuge remotely in wilderness they developed means to survive the viscisitudes of wilderness. If they weren't hairy to begin with, developing hairy bodies would be selected with that becoming propagated. These changes might suggest much more than hundreds of thousands of years to mark the cataclysm that decimated the global population.
