Hello is there spoilers in this review?
The game looks fun, but I feel like the game is kind of expensive considering it`s just a card deck
I wonder how zee feels about this only "ding" 4 years later
Nice Zee! I know it's not a physical game, but you should check out Solitaire Stories on Apple Arcade. Would love to know what you think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0RXWIt6A6g
Thanks for your great review! I am considering to jump into a solo card game and am also drawn to the LOTR card game, you said this has better mechanics… what about the replaying, does the lotr needs an expansion right away like this one? Thanks.
Does it work well with 2 players?
I love Zee Garcia's take on games. We share a lot of the same game interests. 🙂
Mate, it's ETCETERA not EKSETERA. Every time you say eKsetera, a kitten dies.
Other than that, great review and thanks for your content.
The best review, you guys are my go to for board reviews
Awesome, I've now bought this for some 2 player games 😀
If you aren't in love with Lovecraft, this game will just be tedious with a HUGE learning curve. I bought and set up the game and tried going through the confusing beginner game. The guide does a good job of explaining set up and walking you through the first few moves but then it stops and expects you to know all of the rules of combat, investigating, and all the other rules. After 2 hours of searching through THREE rule books, 2 reference cards, 2 characters each with special abilities and two decks of player cards, my head blew clean off. I'm at Arkham hospital if anyone wants to visit me.
In Eldritch Horror, I can and always do play solitaire with four investigators.
Can I do the same with this game? Or would I even want to attempt such a chore?
This game is fun solo I agree, Zee, but I think something should be said about how bad this is with how the cards are (not) organized and how fiddly it is to follow cards representing the monsters and your character with tokens on them on a map that's basically a grid of cards for the locations… this easily becomes a mess if you don't keep it under control.
Great game. My only complaints about the game the table can get a little too crowded for my liking with a card game. Also, if you lose the difficulty tokens, you are screwed. Losing just one means that you can only play the game on certain difficulties and I have had a few close calls with them falling on the floor. Other than that, I really like that you really don't lose until the end of the campaign.
How many copies of the base game do I need to purchase for solitaire play?
Way too expensive for the experience you get from it.
Extremely limited replay ability.
pretty expensive considering the low replayability factor
"The Baddies Deck" should be its actual name
I've played the starter scenario at least 6 times now. most of the plays with different groups of people. I enjoy playing all the different investigators and we still haven't beaten the 3rd scenario with 4 players. The mystery of new cards is amazing, but the joy is almost matched the second time through by playing a new investigator, going for a different ending, or playing with a different number of players.
Thanks for the review.
The game is really nice. The story telling feeling is really cool ! That's the big good part of the game (not sure it will last long once you know the quest well.. but… time will tell…)
The mechanic is nice, once you got it, it get smoother and fluid.
BUT… There are some BUTS !
1) That BLOODY RANDOM BAG ! this can, make you lose so hard, without Any way to avoid it… I "died" few time just becoz those -3 -4 -5 and automatic fail chips…. and this is really… reaaaaaally frustrating… A LOT !
2) That Bloody FFG CORESET POLICY ! That includes good cards only in 1copy instead of 2… So you have to buy a second coreset to enjoy the deckbuild… That's a shame ! Specially with a maximum of 2 cards and a decksize of 30 cards…
3) NO BAG in the box… come on FFG…
65/100 or has the devil says : 666/1000
Cheers from belgium.
Best ArkhamLCG review yet! Note: when Zee says "these and these" …he means "Agenda deck cards and Act deck cards" 😉
looks like a card game that would be fun to play… like the game mechanisms
The best review of the game I have watched so far – I really appreciate the practical approach you take to giving the review. Very clearly put. Thank you.
looks ok, a little meh
I've played the game and I must say its really boring. I really don't understand why FFG keeps making the same Mythos / Cthulhu games just with a different main mechanic. I think dice would make this game much more enjoying rather than drawing chits out of a bag for a random factor. But I agree with Zee, to get any real enjoyment out of this game you will need to buy plenty of expansions because the game gets dry extremely fast. Overall, I was disappointed with it.
Did I miss it, or did Zee completely skip over the way characters get experience and improve decks over the course of a campaign?
I really wanted this to be more like the Cthulhu LCG. Such a shame. Legacy mechanics and a campaign. So much for being able to pick up and drop a game. Get stuck with a losing campaign and you're ruined for later games.
Sounds like tremendous fun.
Is it similar to Elder Sign? Zee could you do a versus video maybe?
Zee, one thing I found about LOTR LCG solitaire (core set), is that most of the scenario's are very hard to beat with the pre-built decks. Have you encountered the same thing with the Arkham Horror LCG core set?
Great review, thanks!
do i need two of the base game? >_>
bought! well.. preordered.
Great review Zee! If you haven't seen the designer's conference from Arkham Nights I highly recommend it! : )
Another LCG? Too much money. Have about two years of Netrunner. Not again.
Thanks Zee, i also feel like this a better LOTR LCG game, I enjoy the solo aspect of it and hope FFG does the same with say their Runewars setting too!
How much randomness is there in the setup? I guess the story is fixed, but do the locations deck and monsters/event deck offer some surprises?
I'm still pretty sure I'll get, just wanting to hear a little more about that aspect.
I've been waiting for a review from you on this. great work!
I wanna buy this game but I have so many games in the universe already (Arkham, Eldritch, Mansions, Elder Sign) that all share characters, items, art, etc. it is getting a bit too much. FFG needs some new IP besides Star Wars and Lovecraft.
preordered a while back for solo play I'm just waiting for it to actually be released in the UK
Zee, love the idea of playing it solo, but how about playing the game with 2-3 players? Do you think it's still solid? Thanks! 🙂
only 1 cumpain included? BAH! Just messin Zee hahah
