Over the last two decades, global travel to the United States has shifted significantly—both in volume and origin.

Using data from the International Trade Administration (as of March 2025), this graphic explores which countries are sending the most visitors and how those rankings have evolved since 2004.

Mexico Surpassed the U.K. to Take Second Place

Back in 2004, Canada led by a wide margin, sending 13.86 million travelers to the U.S. per year, followed by the United Kingdom (4.30 million) and Mexico (3.99 million). By 2024, Canada still held the top spot with 20.24 million visitors, but Mexico surged into second, sending 16.99 million tourists and overtaking the UK, which saw a slight decline to 4.04 million.

Some other shifts came from Asia and Latin America.

India experienced explosive growth—from just 308,800 visitors in 2004 to 2.2 million in 2024, a more than 7x increase. Meanwhile, China saw dramatic gains in the early 2010s but declined sharply by 2024 amid geopolitical and economic headwinds.

Not all trends were upward. Japan’s visitor numbers halved, dropping from 3.7 million to 1.8 million over the same period.

Several smaller countries made notable gains. Colombia tripled its numbers to over 1 million, and nations like Guatemala, Honduras, and the Philippines doubled or tripled their figures—reflecting changing migration patterns, airline connectivity, and rising middle classes.

Tourism Drops Amid Trump Backlash

In 2025, international arrivals to the U.S. are sharply declining. Frustrated by Trump’s tariffs and rhetoric—and unsettled by reports of tourists being detained at the border—many travelers are opting to vacation elsewhere.

According to the federal government’s National Travel and Tourism Office, overseas visits to the U.S. fell by 11.6% in March compared to the same month last year.
