GTA Online put Rockstar on essy street. They got too comfortable
Easy. They found a cash cow (GTAO) that gives them the financial freedom to take their time on making perfect games
I feel like a part of the problem is that as they grew into a larger company, with success from GTA and other titles, they started making bigger and better games. Consider in the early 2000s, I remember when a GTA title came out about once a year and all of them had a very similar feel, except for GTA SA. Then they started spending more money on development, hiring better and more expensive talent, etc, which led to better games but also much longer development times. We saw a more extended release time with GTA 4 and then GTA 5 took even longer and now GTA 6 is even more so. I don't know that it takes this long but it takes a very long time to make a high-end, state-of-the-art game that's realistic and has celebrity actors like Danny McBride, as it's actors. Even an A-list movie can take a few years to produce and they don't even have to build everything from the ground up.
Simple they have a player count of 5 milion players online. they bring in money. no need to rush

Gta 5 became a higher game they’ve ever expected. Many new players that are considered the new gen of gta5 players have carried the game hard. When gta 5 released on Xbox series X and PS5, it remained at the top 3 or top 5 most played games today.

I think that they at least could give us PS5 remastered versions of RDR1 & 2. Naughty Dog is not the fastest game developer either, but at least they have done that.
I would love to experience RDR1 in 4K. It doesn't feel like a super hard thing to do for a company like Rockstar.
With all those details that tockstar puts in to their games, im not surprised that 6 has taken this long because they do have a certain quality to them.
On the issue of online, i think they did milk it for a while. And reselling remasters. But 6 has been in development for about 10 years. Imagine how good its going to be, and we are so close !
Saddest part is people will still use cyberpunk as an example when yet the leaked game play and trailer showed gta6 is actually in a very healthy state, if they wanted to release the game they really could do it right now but they really want to milk gta 5. Rockstar really is taking advantage of the die hard fans so much so they really think rockstar is hard at work.

GTA Online money allowed them to take their time with games to ensure they last a decade or more as well. GTA 5 and RDR 2 still selling million+ copies every year thats insane. At this point in gaming there is not many devs pushing the consoles to their limit Rockstar fills that gap as well sometimes better than Sony or Xbox themselves.
Rockstar has become the goal other devs would like to reach there is no one else in the industry willing to put 500+ million into a game(I guess CDPR did it with Cyberpunk 2077 after all the fixes and expansion). Rockstar pretty much got the whole gaming industry waiting on them.
