I think a lot of show quality Dobies are too inbred which also leads to problems. Also I don't care for breeders who want to do invasive home checks and things of that nature. We're all adults here. You can't guarantee anything just because the situation looks good at the moment. Things can change, people can be deceptive. Some people who may not be able to provide a shining example of the perfect life for a Doberman, but could still provide a loving, healthy home for the dog may end up being denied. If you want your puppy to go to live a life of luxury, up your price. If you want your puppy to go to a normal home where he's more likely to be a bigger part of his human's life, and promote the breed, then don't be so regulatory. I think the most important thing to look for is a breeder who will provide medical and genetic paperwork on the parents. They don't need to be of show quality for this just breed quality. Your more expensive dog almost seems a bit neurotic, which happens when they become too inbred.
I don't know if you will read this. I've had doberman for 50 years. I have a 9 year old. They husband pasted away 18 months ago. I can't find any dobs in central illinios. Please help

Breeders are overbreeding all in the name of money. No matter back yard or register AKC. Why pay for AKC if you just want a Doberman for a pet. Look at all the Doberman who end up in rescues nationwide. Not everyone should have a Doberman or German Shepherd large dogs. Folks cant feed themself or there kids, not talking about feed a large dig and vet bills. You must get real what is happening…..😢

People want their Doberman, Rottweiler, etc. to have a certain look. Many of these dogs used to have cropped ears and docked tails as their respective countries Kennel Clubs’ breed standard. However, across many countries across the world, over the past few years, Kennel Clubs have been no longer accepting animals with cosmetic alterations to participate in shows. The United States remains unrestricted (meaning it allows the practice) in its legal status regarding docking tails and cropping ears. However, many veterinary clinics in the U.S. will refuse to do the procedure for cosmetic purposes and will charge exorbitant rates for “medical” surgeries to phase them out.

I just ran into this video. Alot of good info. A breeder who is on the Akc , has a pup we are going to see soon. Shes 14 months, but they said there was an accidental breeding between her dad and one of his pups which is her mom. They have testing results and other info. He says the 10 pups are doing good. I'm leery, should I be if the papers show all the testing results?

I wish I had watched this video and listened before I welcomed my little fireball who looks like a Doberman, but she is only 75% Doberman 😞The other 25% is mixed with American Stafford Terrier and Chow-Chow. She is a fireball and has behaviors that are un-Doberman-like but I love her. I will probably end up with 2 dogs now bc I want a 100% Dobie like my first one.

Please remember we also have rescue dobermans in South Carolina even young dobies they need homes and love also. There is also a test for your new puppy to check for heart defects the largest cause of a dobermans death..
Okay. I am someone who likes to buy cheap. I finally understand why in this case, it is NOT a good idea, because basically they breed healthy dobermans, which save you thousands down the line. It's more costly up front but cheaper overall. Tysm.
Great video! I checked out some breeders through the links on the website. People sure are proud of their dogs. $2,000-$3,000 and some even have contracts to neuter/spay or not allowed to breed? I don’t have an issue with the prices. I always neuter/spay my dogs and I would never get into breeding dogs. Seems like a lot of work but for that kind of money I feel I should be able to do whatever the heck I want to do with my dog. I just thought that was a bit weird but great info on that site.
Chill my guy, the first breeding ever took place in a back yard. If your last name isn’t Doberman you a backyard breeder. Ranches that breed animals in a commercial manner are puppy mills. Your message should be that one should purchase a puppy from a knowledgeable breeder. Anyone that is running a breeding monopoly or oligarchy needs to be put out of business. Hi I was just wondering if Veronica Doberman home is a place to buy a Dobermans I am interested in buying one myself.
John: we share a love for the breed. I am currently working on/with doberman number 4. I have to share: the AKC marketplace is the absolute worst place to find a pup. Why do I say this? I want to save everyone from at least one scam artist that was and probably is still listed there. I say probably is still listed there because I contacted the AKC repeatedly and spoke to them and they never acted on the information I shared with them and never told me they would police their marketplace listings much less remove the scam artist I brought to their attention. My conclusion: the AKC is all about shows and money and is not at all interested in cleaning up their listings. Apparently to be listed on their marketplace you have to satisfy one or more criterion and anything more they dont bother gettign involved with. Let me share my experience. I dont have the names here right now but I can dig them up and share them if anyone is interested. I almost bought a doberman from a woman who had a listing on the akc marketplace. We sent many emails back and forth and then many phone calls. She informed me she operated a ptsd horse farm and as a result of that and that she was a registered (i forget what it is but something like a 501c non profit corporation or some such thing) so she could give me a tax writeoff if I bought a pup from her. She sent me a beautiful glossy brochure with loads of pictures of horses on farmland and lots of dobermans. The tax writeoff deal is what caused me to begin doing research. So I contacted the IRS and they have no record of anyone with the name she providedas being that type registered corporation. Next since she had the address of her ptsd farm I contacted the state and they had no record so I then contacted the town and they had no record and that led me to the town police department who informed me the address was a marsh land owned by an elderly couple across the street and the elderly couple have no dobermans, dont breed dogs and arent involved in ptsd or veterans issues at all. The ppolice department further informed me that I was not the first person to contact them regarding this lady supposedly selling dobermans. I did more research and found this lady had a facebook page but it was apaprently abandoned because there were loads of folks leaving comments that once they got their pup they never received papers, others said the pup was in bad shape etc… Finally I contacted the AKC with all this information and they never expressed the least bit of surprise much less resolve to delist this woman. I forget the specifics but they said something like the woman satisfied their requirement to be listed and they dont subsequently bother to police their own listings. THAT to me means the AKC could care less about the dogs thye profess to love. And if you think about it they seem all about shows and show dogs specifically winning show dogs because winning show dogs get big bucks, but if you think about it more winning show dogs are actually what is destroying the breed. Well, I felt so strongly about this I needed to write. It is all true and I can back it up. God bless.

I wanted to buy a healthy Doberman for my last dog in my lifetime. After Covid, I cannot afford one. $1,500.00 is too expensive7 for a Sr Citizen but I could handle it. $4,000.00 is the going price since Covid. They are rude and haughty now, the breeders, the rescues and forget getting one from a shelter! They are snagged up by rescues as soon as a phone call. So I have given up on German bred dogs. I'll not own a dog again, it seems. Too bad, my Dobie dog was happy, healthy and had the best home and family. Lived a very long life, as did my Schnauzers and German Shepherds. Too bad it is all about the money today today.

I get that you are trying to give good advice, but in my experience what you are saying is not completely true. One question that most reputable breeders ask is “have you ever owned a Doberman?” If one answers “No”, this is a death nail. Never mind that a person has owned a dog or even owned a dog like a GS. Most reputable breeders tend to only sell to those with prior experience. I have tried to gain experience through those that are owners and through the local DPCA club, but makes no difference. So, yes all of this is great information and really appreciate it. However, in my experience it just not that easy and in fact it is discouragingly hard. It is to the point, where back yard breeders may be the way to go just to show a reputable breeder I have gained experience with this breed.

I also heard a reputable breeder will crop and dock your Doberman for you if that’s what you wish to do for your Doberman. If you don’t want to crop or dock I heard you have to tell the breeder as soon as possible and they will leave it natural for you.
