In the age of streaming and franchise fatigue, ballooning film budgets and less engaged moviegoers have made box office bombs more common.
Major blockbusters now routinely lose millions when they miss the mark, but some suffer even greater losses. This graphic shows the biggest box office bombs of 2024 by net loss, calculated by subtracting revenue from expenses.
Financial estimates come from Deadline.
What Was the Biggest Box Office Bomb of 2024?
Below, we show the revenue, expenses, and net loss of the biggest box office bombs of 2024.
Movie | Production Company/Studio | Revenues | Budget | Net Loss |
---|---|---|---|---|
Kraven The Hunter | Sony Pictures | $120M | $191M | $-71M |
Megalopolis | Lionsgate | $70.5M | $146M | $-75.5M |
Borderlands | Lionsgate | $104M | $184M | $-80M |
Furiosa – A Mad Max Saga | Warner Bros | $211M | $330.6M | $-119.6M |
Joker – Folie à Deux | Warner Bros | $227M | $371.3M | $-144.3M |
DC’s Joker: Folie à Deux was the biggest box office flop of 2024, with a net loss of $144 million.
The jukebox musical film is a sequel to the successful 2019 film Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix, which was the first R-rated film to surpass $1 billion in revenue, later to be surpassed by Deadpool & Wolverine. Joker: Folie à Deux, however, only made $227 million in revenue.
High-budget sequels like Joker: Folie à Deux and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga largely failed to recapture the success of their predecessors, resulting in significant financial losses for Warner Bros.
Sony Picture’s Kraven the Hunter was met with harsh reviews and reflected growing audience fatigue with conventional superhero films.
While the three other films on this list are based on existing IP, revered American filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola’s science fiction drama Megalopolis stands out as the only original film.
Megalopolis was Coppola’s two-decade dream project, which he financed from his own money for $120 million, even selling off part of his successful wine label.
