Singapore ranks as the world’s top country by merchandise exports per capita, reaching $79,181 per person in 2023. The city-state has long positioned itself as a critical trading gateway to Asia.
Following Hong Kong in second place, the Netherlands ranks third with $53,045 per capita, and its location positions it as a traditional trading gateway to Europe.
The UAE’s Rise as a New Global Trade Competitor
While Singapore and the Netherlands have historically dominated Asian and European trade networks, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has quickly emerged as a key player in the Middle East, ranking fourth globally with $51,254 per capita in merchandise exports.
Much of this success can be attributed to Jebel Ali Port in Dubai, the busiest port in the Middle East. The port serves as a vital link for trade between Asia, Europe, and Africa, enabling the UAE to act as a regional powerhouse for re-exports and logistics.
From 2018 to 2023, the UAE’s merchandise exports grew by 25%, reflecting its expanding role in global commerce. Investments in port infrastructure, trade-friendly policies, and a diversified export economy have fueled the growth.
The Future of Global Trade Hubs
As trade patterns evolve, countries that invest in logistics, and supply chain infrastructure will continue to shape global commerce.
The UAE’s rapid ascent shows how infrastructure development can propel a country into the ranks of the world’s top exporters.
With the Jebel Ali Port at its core, the UAE is cementing its position as the leading gateway for trade across the Middle East and Africa—offering a competitive alternative to traditional trading hubs in Asia and Europe.
