Tentacles are good.
4 years passed , and this review still stinks. The Others is a great game
You make an interesting point about the theme – but I would say that the names of the cards and abilities are actually quite thematic. Ok, the game does not explain what exactly they mean by ‘corruption’ but it’s not that difficult, for me at least, to imagine what the concept of that may involve thematically. As for the rulebook giving you story, I happen to appreciate the immersion of that. And true, some of the monsters don’t necessarily seem to reflect what the Sin is because… tentacles. And as for the cheesecake, yeah, scantily clad women in miniatures eye roll – but it’s not that bothersome for me, personally. I am actually much much more concerned with why the monsters for Lust are priests holding babies… that is very bizarre and creepy, when it would have made more thematic sense to have Naked lady as the Lust figures instead
I really loved this game when I played it. It was the corruption mechanic that made it for me. The fact that the game is 'balanced' to where you HAVE to use it. Win before you die or are damned. The fact that it is true while learned implicitly instead of explicitly (even as flavor text), means that it is a realization that you come to on your own, and only with a winning attitude. You see that you're going to lose anyway, in the immediacy of an encounter, or in the time it will take you to accomplish an objective (which is pushed to the wall due to the aforementioned). You have to become as much of the monsters to fight them, and it is truly a battle first and foremost with your own corruption. I don't remember how the reinforcement mechanic worked exactly, but I think it was only so many of the team that had to go down before the game was lost. (if you could not reinforce or something)
This is honestly my favourite board game and I love the "fifteen year old designer" skit because it is SO TRUE.
But I think the raw silliness of it just adds to the charm for me.
Most horror fans love some Lovecraftian influence and I didn't see anything wrong with the card titles. Clearly a bias review. Disliked.
Nice review…. just one thing – 3 hours big box epic? 😀 are you sure? We have played 16 games of The Others (different stories, sins, etc..) and it never took more like 60 – 90 minutes.
I can't fathom how you managed to make this game take 3 hours.
What are some other similar games better than this one that people might suggest?
I like this!
He’s not a Minotaur
Hey!
Great video – glad to see someone new.
I, personally, like the game, BUT I would not have liked it as much if I didn't back the Kickstarter. With the Kickstarter, they unlocked the full sets of the other 5 sins, as well as a large amount of new characters and acolytes. The game would not have a whole lot of retail value – being that you only had two different sins and one set of characters to play with. I love this game – but only because I am able to create so many different combinations for both the sins and the humans. At $100 for the KS, you did get a lot of minis, but the value came in with the added scenarios and the ability to vary each game in significant ways (the opposite of Zombicide).
You're right – the minis aren't visually thematic, but I think that their unique effects on the game do (kind of) coincide with what I would imagine each sin would do. The models are pretty cool and the other sins (wrath, sloth, etc) don't have the tentacles like the Pride avatar. The whole "vampires have nothing to do with 7 Sins" is all well and good, but the whole point of the game was to take mythological/religiously-inspired heroes from all over the world and have them collide. I think that it was a decent effort to incorporate as many different variety of heroes as possible.
That being said – knowing what I know now, I would not have purchased this game at retail (the game at about 50-60 with each of the other 5 sins at about 20 would make this game WAY too expensive, not to mention the two whole expansions I got). Replayability has a lot to do with my opinion on a game, and 7 Sins only is at the top of my books because of the amount of stuff I got by backing the KS.
See you around more!
You are a great actor and I like your videos very much, but you missed a point or do not know what it's playing. Playing is exactly the same with fifteen and sixty, if you know how to play. Imagination is what you need to play. It does not matter if everything fits perfectly.
Awesome review, but needs more tentacles. ;p
I pretty much agree on all your points. High theme games need to really focus on…well…theme.
Very fair review and finally someone that can actually address what theme is directly with a game. Thanks!
I like how your reviews always point out the good and the bad sides of the game. Keep it up 🙂
That is the actual coolest shirt.
Totally agree that while the designer said he was inspired by the gruesome tentacle-y artwork, a lot of the heroes and baddies seem to be apart of the 7 sins theme. The art certainly conveys a different type of theme, more like a specific body-transformation or possession horror than a biblical sins theme. I think the 7 sins concept might have come more from Eric Lang's corruption game play mechanism rather than the art. Also yes I agree that some of the hero sculpts are lazy derivatives of other horror (e.g. werewolves). The tokens are less thematic and more pasted on for game play purposes too I agree.
That being said, totally agree with how the gameplay is the core draw here. The minis are just bling of this particular (CMON) publisher. They definitely love to create sculpts and print expensive plastic to gamers.
You are becoming the best reviewer ever! Informative and precise!
Nice video. Is that a Threadless T-shirt?
Have you posted your review of Raise Your Goblets already? I'm really looking forward to see it, I still haven't decided whether to buy the game or not.
Great review. I'm definitely not interested in it now after watching. I think you're right about CMON throwing in tons of minis instead of better gameplay to inflate the price of their games.
Hilarious new avatar. He ,"your mother" and "your girlfriend" are my favourite characters.
Going into this review, I knew that I had no interest in The Others. Yet, I happily clicked Play and was certainly entertained. Thank you!
loved the new avatar; loved the review: i can already tell that this is not, unfortunately, my group's kinda game… i can keep them playing for 1 hour tops… if there's wine or beer… anyway, thanks again
Nice video! Could you make a review on Mechs vs. Minions from Riot?
the new avatar is making me crave bacon pancakes…
excellent review! Topnotch!
It's one of the games you know it's not top notch, but still want to play it again and again. I don't know why.
Jesus Christ, I'm so embarrassed. The rulebook, though well covered and easy to understand, is thick indeed, making it easy to miss things. I've been playing the Sin for a while and getting my butt kicked. Reddit was having a laugh that I was having such a difficult time. This review mentioned something I overlooked which changed EVERYTHING. You only get your corruption track bonuses by taking corruption that roll. for the past few weeks, we've been playing in a way where you always had the powers depending on your place on the tracker, making high corruption not a huge deal. Thanks for sorting that out.
I will say I do enjoy the theme. I feel with an excited enough Sins player, this can be very thematic. Giving the devil what he wants for more power seems to be a good use of the corruption idea, and while vampires and werewolves seems weird, I picture this similar to the Heavy Metal world, where that sort of thing wouldn't be a very big deal.
Great review, informative and entertaining.
I will echo others saying that I have never had a game last more than 1.5-2 hours. I wonder why yours are taking longer.
I noticed when you were illustrating wounds you just placed them on the hero board. You know that each wound covers up a corruption bonus, right? Makes them hurt even more.
I liked this game overall, but was a little underwhelmed. Good, not great for me.
But I will buy pretty much anything by Lang…
So far my experience has been frustration. The Sinner seems over powered, but we have only played three times, and only the starter scenario. As for theme, I agree, it's a bit lacking. We just put on some scary background music and turn down the lights. 🙂
I'm painting the mini's now, so I'm not giving up on this one. I have only completed 25 tentacles, 287 to go.
Agree. Cool theme, boring art direction. I like the supernatural heroes personally; rule of cool! (And because the human heroes have some of the blandest designs ever.)
Even if the art is generic, the theme comes through the mechanisms wonderfully, and it's a tight, tension-filled game. Maybe broached 3 hours the first couple of plays, gets quicker as you play more/with less players. On that note, do prefer it with lower player counts. Tends to be quicker (no/less objective discussion), and for me, controlling 1 hero doesn't feel like you get to do enough (kinda like playing a third of a game).
Ever played Blood Bowl? I'd love to hear your opinion on that.
Good review sir! So what you're saying is we're gonna get a review for Blood Rage soon 🙂
I found it charming that the game doesn't take itself too seriously. More tentacles on stuff in a cartoony future world seem very fitting with the theme. It could easily have been way too 'Lovecraft-y'. Its my favorite 1vs all, since it is actually fun to play as the overlord as well, and much more balanced than fx Descent and IA. I think maybe because it sacrifices some thematic elements and tries more to be 'Pandemic with dice against an opponent', even if that makes the mechanisms more abstract
Love these short reviews with some humour sprinkled in ❤
overrated. flavor of the month. forgotten by 2018.
you are doing great videos! Keep it up 😀
Pleas reviwe One Deck Dungeon. Love your videos, keep up the good work.
The corruption theme comes through really well in the corruption stories, where each player has a dark past revealed when the reach maximum corruption, as well as certain characters becoming traitor's or just downright committing suicide if they reach that point.
Yay! Another Actualol review! Although I'll never play this game (not my taste), I love your in-between sketches in your reviews. Thanks for making my day a little less dull.
As usual, a well spoken take on a game, and our views marry beautifully! Keep on keeping on, friend!
Another enjoyable review. I often go through some of these games and when I see things like "Pain Daughter" thrown in "because" I shudder at what parts of my brain are required to shut down in order to play.
I dig the new avatar
This is exactly how a game review should be like. Informative and entertaining. Top notch!
A good critique of a game I'm going to let other people in my group get! I have yet to play any of Lang's designs, but I generally enjoy big box epics, and am particularly interested in the Rising Sun setting of feudal Japan. Did this game's shortcomings affect your hype or enthusiasm for Rising Sun (assuming you had some in the first place)?
