thank god they can at least smoke
    no temptation ☕🚬
no smoking in prisons these days but it kept the peace big time
also of course 26:12 golic he's skipping away with the smokes from the busted machine 🚬 damn right
    yup 'erratic'

Despite whatever shortcomings it may have, the fact that the Assembly Cut restores the entire Golic subplot that makes the back half of the movie more understandable is what makes it preferable for me. The ox also makes more sense as a host for the alien, given the size of the juvenile that emerges in both versions of the movie (seriously, the hole in the dog isn't even half as big as it'd need to be for that creature to have successfully escaped the body). The only thing I wish it retained was Ripley's death at the end.

Either way, I think this movie is great and definitely doesn't deserve the amount of disdain that it's historically gotten. I'm glad that as time has gone on, it generally seems to be getting the praise it has always deserved.

Yeah, speak for yourself 🙄🙄 The Assembly cut is better and that includes what you yourself call "effects" for Ripley's sacrifice in said version.

Dillon was the first movie character where I felt he really represented this idea of prisoner mentality mixed with a dark kind if integrity – an excellent character backed up with good writing and outstanding performance

… really made me think about things I had just not been aware of, kinda scarynway to interact with people, but also hard as nails form of optimism and pragmatism and anger deep deep down
I understand that Charles Dutton (actor) did serve time – and it shows, but in an uplifting way that it feels that Dutton is somewhat at peace with the past as well as bot replicating his specific experiences, being able to channel the writing and the character

for me, this influenced my teen views on the place of anti-heroes in society and was a character to look up to and something to emulate

I'll always hold the prayers uttered in high regard, in particular the end part "…. until The Day" 😎🤌 so good

I think I do largely prefer the Assembly Cut, but I also quite prefer Spike as the host. The countenance of the Alien in this movie is much more doglike than oxlike.

I wish people would stop saying 'xenomorph'. This is and has always been a misnomer from Lt. Gorman. It was a reference to a non-native/non-indigenous life form possibly being on LV-426, not a specific reference to the 'Alien'.

Theatrical cut for me as well. Maybe it's because I managed for AMC theatres and got the film a week early and showed it privately for me and a few friends. We all dropped acid. When it was over, I ran up and re-threaded the film and we watched it again. So great. Now we have a new version to watch that takes from both and I can't wait to see it.

Assembly Cut all the way. Ideally with the quality of remastered CGI scenes + some recut scenes from Legacy Cut (birth of Alien, talk among inmates during lure to the furnace scene), but without that weird red filter and that cheesy alien burst right at the end, that would be my dream come true edition.

Assembly cut is great indeed but the Dog scenes, Alien birth from the Dog instead of a dead Ox, and the ending with the Queen burst out of Ripley's chest are indeed better 🔥

These scenes I mentioned should never be changed, but the rest of entire Assembly cut is great

I love the content and your deep dive into the alien series. The nostalgia of these movies and characters is like a warm escape. The work you do on this subject makes a difference for someone like me in a big rig 11 hours a day by myself. It gives me a connection to the joys and excitement of my childhood. Thank you for what you invest your time in sir.

It's been over a month since I saw Alien 3 for the first time, the Theatrical cut (as of this comment). And I will agree, each cut has advantages over the other, even if I haven't seen the Assembly cut. It's hard to say whether Alien 3 truly is a massive disaster or a misunderstood work that's got some genuine beauty to its art aside from its look. While I am a bit divided on the shot of Ripley's sacrifice, I will say that either one shows that Ripley would always die on her own terms, and even if the chestburster had killed her while she was falling in, she still would've won, so I wouldn't be worried too much on that part. The Golic subplot was also astonishing with how seamlessly it was edited out. But perhaps the biggest lesson we can learn from Alien 3 is how far one's vision of the final destination can differ from reality, and all the paths that it created along the way.

Alien 3 is quite rare, the fact that theatrical version is less good than the extended version. It is always interesting to see cut scenes but honestly, those should have been cut for the best of the movie.
For example in Aliens the story about the colonists who fint the alien ship, shat subplot destroy tempo, has some bad acting and generally bring tempo down and we just do not need the story. In my mind, it is better to not know for the mystery of the story!

I'm of two minds about this. I only saw clips of the Theatrical Cut when it was broadcast on television when I was little, seeing a few minutes here or there when the TV station was being changed. I saw the Assembly Cut when I got the Quadrilogy from the library, remembering a few of the scenes from the channel surfing when I was a kid.

I can see your POV. If I was in the editing chair for, as an example, a 'Final Cut' of Alien 3…I'd keep both the setup of the EEVA being pulled out of the water and the model shot. I would differ with you in making the Ox the host and just deleting the Spike line from Murphy's death scene. Unfortunately I'd keep the jumps between Gollic and Ripley/Damaged Bishop. Maybe add an audio clip of Gollic scream before seeing the Runner bolt from the tank. Keep the scene with 85 in the steamy bathroom as an ironic bookend to Ripley at the beginning like you suggested and yes, for the love of all that is holy add the one-liner to Ripley killing the bug.

I agree that, providing you clean up some of the jankyness, the Theatrical Cut ending is what I'd use.

Also, I wonder if the reason that Fincher isn't consulted for his Director's Cut is mainly they are afraid he'd show them up by making his Alien 3?

I have really struggled with Alien 3 for years… it was such a gut punch killing off Hicks and Newt, and as a kid I just remember it being so depressing. There’s not much hope in the film, however over the years I have come to accept that this is indeed cannon and is the way the trilogy plays out. If you were to imagine the beast being real, and the events of Alien and Aliens being real, then there’s a good chance there would be no happy ending. Ripley is a tragic character, but she goes out on her own terms. For me, the assembly cut is better because you just get more of the world… more scenes that inform characters and the Golic subplot is really interesting and adds a lot of tension to the film. I imagine a Final Cut where they choose the dog (prefer this) and yet keep more of those longer character scenes. The film deserves a Final Cut with restored effects, or improved effects… gosh imagine what they could do now? But I doubt it will happen.

Hey content creator! Thumbs up. Normally I can't stand videos about movies but the Alien franchise and a few others, like analysis's of 2001 Space Odyssey, The Thing, Eraserhead, etc, some can be kind of ok by providing other interpretations which are sometimes ok and sometimes not.

This one wasn't too bad. Happy new year and thanks for the good watch, you earned an upvote as I wish I had a channel to do the same with too. Cheers.

Of course he likes the theatrical cut more listen to the way he pronounces his TS he's like a what do you call it one of those hipsters he's going against the grain because he's trying to be deep with his thoughts and his his his point of view it's just his point of view guys by the way it's just what he says should be there it shouldn't be there it's just his point of view and everything's kind of backwards and upside down so he could seem edgy and yeah like I said the way he pronounces his T's of course he was gonna say he prefers the theatrical because that's the you know opposite of what most people feel but regardless of maybe how like manipulative this little like review is it is entertaining that's the point

I personally never gave alien 3 any credit. I had animosity toward its director only because he killed off 3 of my favorite characters. I went to see it in the theater so u can imagine how close to the ground my jaw was at these revelations. I wanted to walk out until I saw Charles Dutton was in the movie. I'm such a big alien fan I have to say I was secretly entertained by the film, but if asked I'll always say 🤬 NO! I hated that 🤬 show!!! I wanted to see Hicks, Newt, and Bishop man! I'll always hate that was done cuz I truly believe these characters could all do good spin offs for the franchise. JMO

This is a fantastic breakdown of the differences between the two cuts. I’ve always loved Alien 3 since I first saw it as a kid. This was when the theatrical cut was the only available version and I thought it was a very emotional and moving ending for the character of Ripley. I appreciate certain moments and scenes in the assembly cut, but overall I prefer the theatrical cut. I think a lot of the extra parts with the various prisoners don’t amount to much. Maybe the Golic subplot should’ve been included as the idea of it is interesting and we get to see what happens to Golic and Junior, but it seems kind of random and pointless and makes Morse seem like a total idiot for freeing Golic. It also takes away from Morse being the lone survivor and kind of a hero at the end since he’s responsible for the deaths of most of the prisoners.

I like the point you made about how even though the theatrical cut removed certain plot elements, the editing is sometimes more effective, like when the beginning and ending of certain scenes are trimmed and it transitions more effectively going from one scene to the next.

Two big reasons why I prefer the theatrical cut are the dog chestburster and queen chestburster at the end. The funeral scene is much more effective with the dog. It’s disturbing and sad and juxtaposes the funeral better than the ox does. And since the chestburster came out of a dead ox in the assembly cut, that means if Dillon had killed Ripley the chestburster would’ve come out of her anyway since the host doesn’t need to be alive.

I think the queen chestburster at the end is a powerful moment for the ending of the movie and the trilogy. Goldenthal’s score is epic and magnificent. In the assembly cut the score was butchered in this scene.

I’ve seen the assembly cut several times since it first came out and while I like certain moments here and there, I’m just much more drawn to the theatrical cut. I think its pacing is better and is ultimately more satisfying.

I agree: The chestburster works best coming out of a dog rather than an ox, as it ties better with the behaviour of the alien at the end of the film. The subplot with them capturing the alien, and Golic worshipping it and ultimately setting it free, is a stroke of genius! And the final scene with Ripley diving into the pit works best with the alien bursting out of her chest…. If only there was some way of creating your own definitive version of Alien 3! Both versions are good but somehow unsatifactory!

So I am a year late on commenting, but my first, and only, experience with this film was the Assembly cut. I didn't even know about the dog being the host in the theatrical release. I took a moment to consider the differences regarding just how the face hugger/host/threat was introduced in both versions and I think I actually like the reveal in the assembly cut better. When the guy finds the face hugger and so casually holds it up, my first reaction is always "oh shit. Someone got got". I didn't suspect the cow at first, but the moment we had it's chest burster scene the dots were connected and it made complete sense to me.

I’ve only ever seen the Assembly Cut and Alien 3 is my favorite movie in the series. It’s bleak and nihilistic in a way that reminds me of the late 90’s early 2000’s movies I grew up watching like CUBE, but also still striving to be something a bit more elevated than those movies

Watched Alien 3 as a kid and couldn't really remember any of it. After Romulus came out I had a lot of my fire for Alien reignited and I binged all the movies. Went for the directors cuts where I could and found the Assembly cut of Alien 3. So watching it was still quite new for me despite having watched it like 15 years ago. I liked the suspense of not knowing where the alien was going to come from and just like you said, led to my friend and I speculating what might happen as we were watching it. Knowing how the theatrical works, I think I prefer the slow burn of the assembly cut. Not to mention the visual of the cattle bleeding everywhere was perfectly creepy and eerie, it just added to the suspense. I was quite surprised at how much I DIDN'T hate this movie. Story is kind of weird, but its actually got pretty solid character writing and building – and its really Resurrections that lived up to the infamy.
