Dog ear cropping: is it worth it? Cropped Ears vs. Natural Ears

I too prefer the ears cropped cause of the looks for that matter, but I won't do it because the cropping increases the risk of otitis and dermatitis in the hairless area after the crop due to exposure to sun, water, wind and flies.
It could actually decrease the functionality of the dog. They could avoid water to protect their ear canal and probably will constantly scratch that area causing irritation.

I’m trying to find out natural pit bull ears. I found a poor little abandoned pit bull starving in the street. She was 5 mos according to vet. She’s been with me about a month and her ears were pointing straight up and now they are starting to flop down. Super cute actually. I’m trying to find a home for her but I live in southeast Texas and it’s hard to find her a home. Just wondering what’s up w her ears.

This was the first time having my dogs ears cropped and tails docked. My male Cane Corso’s ears were cropped and tail docked. My female Cane Corso’s ears aren’t docked nor the tail. Their litter has a nice mixture of the two. Some have both done and some have one or the other. If my clients request it, I have it done 🤷🏿‍♂️

It does not enhance hearing. There is no confirmed scientific source for that claim.
Ear infections are just common in certain breeds like beagles and bassets.
Cropping was used as protection for most breeds that were used for working/hunting/fighting.
Comparing dogs with cropped ears to dog brees with natural standing ears also doesnt hold up… dog breeds with naturally standing ears have fur to protect the ear from cold, heat and dirt which cropped dogs lack…that makes them vulnerable to infections by weather and dirt

However, the AKC says there’s nothing in AKC rules requiring cropped ears to show these breeds. But they did formally protest the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) position statement against ear cropping and tail docking.

Good call! Cropping is illegal here in the UK and sadly so are Pits and soon Bullys. I don't agree with the reasons personally and believe strongly it should be a licensed breed at least. Anyway I would crop.

I think that cropped ears scares people.
They look scarier and that is what most people look for.
I personally would not crop the dogs ears.
Now if the dog already had the ears cropped, then that is different.
So if I decided to come to you for a puppy or two, and you crop the ears, then okay.

It is very sketchy that ever wild Caine has pointy ears and they trying to convince me it’s better for it to be long and floppy. Dogs were literally breed and created and to be friendly looking. And want to stand on some moral high ground because we want our dogs to look how there were intended without any harm to the dog.

My son had a pit without her tail cropped. That tail was a whip and painful! I do t know the real reason for cropping the tail, but I’m for that one!!

A dog is not a natural animal so owning a dog is selfish in general

VERY interesting! I have a Beagle, lol, had to grin when you made one pop up on screen. Those are the ultimate flop-ears; cute and cuddly on a pet dog, and allegedly designed to create a half-closed space between them when the head is down, to optimally capture scent particles from the ground, and waft them into the nose. That's actually quite fascinating to watch – when that Beagle nose is down, they really do create a "scent chamber". But then again, those flop-ears get dirty, both inside and outside, a lot, and need bi-weekly cleaning. My German Shepherd's erect ears never once needed cleaning – in all the 8 years I've had her. Pro of cropping – looks bad ass and protective, better hearing in normal environments,but blasting music , guns & fireworks would do damage. Human Babies get their own kind of “cropping”, & that’s not natural either, so walk the talk.

Cons of cropping /easier to get dirty(sand,etc)&yes easier to clean, not as fuzzy to touch lips on ,let ‘em have beautiful wolf ears. They do look bad ass but it still represents dogs fighting for the enjoyment/ betting of man. That’s intolerable to me.

If you're not using your dog for big game hunting or serious guarding, you don't need them cropped. But if people want to crop their dogs then they should only do it when they're pups.

Nature had intended that there ears grow long and over because of domestication ….if your not living in the wild and the dog is your pet then why does it need its ears done ? Pointless unless actually needed
