Over the past decade, several once-prominent brands like BlackBerry, LG, and Nokia have exited the smartphone market. Today, the landscape is dominated by Apple and Samsung, with Google emerging as a distant third.

In this graphic, we illustrate smartphone production by brand between 2015 and 2024. The data comes from TrendForce, as of April 2025.

Samsung and Apple’s Dominance

Over the past 10 years, global smartphone production has been dominated by two industry giants: Samsung and Apple.

Samsung has remained the top vendor, although its annual production declined from 321.5 million units in 2015 to 225.84 million in 2024. Apple, on the other hand, experienced steady growth, increasing from 215.32 million to 222.5 million units during the same period.

Brands like LG, once in third place until 2020, completely exited the smartphone business by 2022. HTC and BlackBerry faded from the market after 2018, while Sony declined sharply—from 29.5 million units in 2015 to just 2.45 million in 2024.

Mid-tier manufacturers like Asus and Acer saw brief success early in the decade. Asus, for example, produced 17 million phones in 2015 but dropped to only 270,000 by 2024. Acer, after modest production in the mid-2010s, disappeared entirely after 2016.

The Rise of Google

One of the most interesting stories of the decade is the rise of Google’s Pixel line. While Google is far from competing with Apple and Samsung in sheer volume, it has gained a reputation for innovation and quality. By 2024, Pixel production reached 10.5 million units, making Google the third-largest vendor globally.

Notably, Google’s focus on AI integration and camera software has helped differentiate the Pixel brand, appealing to a niche audience of tech-savvy users.
