Came here to refresh my knowledge befote getting a new puppy. Found myself smiling and nodding along because I'm parent, too. She said puppies aren't like babies or kids and that's a laugh. This same calm leadership, prep the environment so good choices are easy and poor choices are rare, etc was all the kind of thing we did for our babies and toddlers and now they are whip smart, thoughtful, excelling elementary students that people compliment us on, and we weren't drill sargeants. But we also didn't coddle or let them do whatever. Toddlers and puppies both crave structure and leadership, they need the safety of parent leadership to let them test making choices in a safe environment where failure means oops or a little mess not mortifying embarassment or injury. Please suggest what treats you give your dog for the training
I think my puppy sees me more as a sheep bc she will “heard” me and I can barely walk before she bites me. And when I try to correct her she bites and growls. I’m barely even touching her.
When we first got our rescue and went out for two hours we came back to all sorts of chewed things in the house and it was ah ok we need to set what is hers and what is not, setting boundaries took about a week but she is happy now with her box of chew toys that she picks herself and no more chewing of anything that is not hers.

My dog doesn't seek leadership and doesn't want to please me or even acknowlege me in any way when we are outside.
Describing bad behaviour is useless without offering a solution is a waste of time. That was 11 minutes wasted.
i know a lot of dog people would find the idea horrific, but as someone whos allergic to cat/dog dander, they really seem calmer and more well adjusted when theyre not allowed up on beds or furniture at will. once in a while they'll come up and ask permission to jump up on the couch with me, and my response is usually no but sometimes yes so they dont get too pushy lol. on really cold winter nights my dog will ask to get up on the bed with me and ill give him his own blanket to lay on, but he won't beg for the bed unless its REALLY that cold on the dog bed. it's a nice balance and gives me a chance to gauge how theyre feeling. theyre very polite and considerate of my space. i know i would cuddle and bury my face into them if i could, but i think theres a lot of value in establishing concrete boundaries of high value areas. and when its super duper cold and they nose the bed and look at me til i notice them, it gives me a chance to let them up into a high value spot when they really need it and be a good, fair leader taking care of them.

worried we have leadership issues. I feel like I tell her no ALL day and correct her. She goes back to chewing on the same objects we remove her from each and every chance she gets. The puppy biting is also out of control. We are wearing her out with tug, training with every meal, and she does not hate her crate. It just that she refuses to wear a house line. she FREAKS out like a little bucking bull. not sure how to remedy that.

My puppy prefers to play with my cat much more than with me. Don't know what to do about it) If I try to play tug or anything with the puppy, and he sees the cat – he just start chasing cat all over the house and they both seems to have fun. My comands are totally ignored in this moment and even if I trying to stop puppy with my hands – he bites and doesn't want to listen.
After I heard "teach your dog to make good choices" without any specifics for the 6th or 7th time I switched this off

I just started leasing him in the kitchen with me. Because he goes pees on my carpet. I am trying to get all my boys on the same page… I am going to start keeping the toys more now. I am not going to let him go roam anymore.

I would recommend this video to anyone, its so informative and you explain it so easily yet well, here are some of my notes for anyone who wants to revise these tips
Leadership: Not acting agressive towards dog, too emotional in certain situations, controling
Goal -) To build your relationship/Dog's confidence
How to get dog to listen? Become a good leader.
– Set up rules and do not give excessive luxuries
-) Ex. Do not give treats for no reason
Do not let dog in places where he can easily misbehave and learn bad habits (my personal rule: kitchen near food)
Do not let dog have all toys available at all times – due to safety and also to let him build a relationship with you, so he can connect you with his favorite toy
Do not let dog sleep with you or sit on the couch until he learns to listen and develops good habits
1. Say what you mean: Insist on what you say, but be calm, have patience. Ex. When you ask dog to sit and he doesn't listen, say it calmly with confidence again until he redirects his attention to you and follows through
2. Put your dogs in situations where theyre less likely to do bad choices -) use lots of positive reinforcement throughout day while still getting your dog to learn discipline
Ex. Crate training/leash or long line on dogs
3. Show that youre a good leader: Dont just give dog treats for no reason – have him deserve it through fun ways – tricks
Ex. Have dog wait in crate until you open door and they barge out
The hardest thing for me is when I call my puppy to me and he ignores me, then when I walk towards him he runs away, how do I deal with that?
All of this is just sooo helpful! Me and my husband are just preparing to be dog parents soon, and this channel has been so helpful. In India, dog training is not seen at the level that is explained here or as I witnessed when in the States. It almost seems impossible to reach this level of dog training to most people but we will definitely try to imbibe all the learnings and hopefully, we will be successful in this journey.
