Why is it that whenever a Mario game has a basic story (which is literally all the time aside from Paper Mario, let’s be honest) it receives near universal praise, but whenever Sonic does the same thing then casuals call it bad?
I get that this is just an opinion at the end of the day, but man, the general consensus on Sonic-related products never ceases to rub me the wrong way. Mostly because nearly everyone expects them to be atrocious at worst or mediocre at best.
If that was truly the case, then how in the world has Sonic lasted over 30 years and is still going strong?
Last time I checked, Sonic Prime on Netflix was still a top 10 kids show; the movies have received predominantly glowing reviews across the board; and (well received fairly recent titles) Sonic Frontiers, Sonic Mania, Sonic Generations, and Sonic Colors outnumber (poorly received recent titles) Forces, Lost World, and Boom.
Which is still a mixed bag to be sure, but it’s not nearly the heap of failures various “individual thinkers” with status make it out to be.
I strongly believe the Sonic IP as a whole deserves infinitely more respect than it gets. Need I remind you that He was once the king of the entire industry and (once again) has remained beloved and popular across multiple generations of people for over 30 years, despite having titles rushed out the door to meet a Christmas release plaguing his reputation throughout all that time?
Long term consistent success doesn’t just happen to any old franchise, so why isn’t Sonic The Hedgehog’s legacy celebrated?
…Oh, right. It was forgotten by the general public generations ago in favor of beating the dead horse that is Sonic 06 and Sonic Boom and a few toxic fans here and there as though they reflect the majority of the fanbase. Most of us just like to play Sonic because it’s fun and there’s nothing else exactly like it. That’s all.
Ah well. At least this review didn’t bring up the infamous phrase “Sonic had a rough transition to 3D.”
But when you say things like “the combat and overall game isn’t as bad as I thought it would be”, it shows that there’s still an unfortunate negative stigma surrounding the Sonic IP for seemingly unjust double standard esc reasons. And I’m through seeing it perpetuated over and over and over and over again since 2006…
