I noticed a reference to Nintendo's 1967 Ultra Machine and Slugger Mate on a poster in Mario's room.
Kinda of a stretch, but Mario disliking mushrooms then later have to rely on them could be a Popeye reference. (well the live action Robin Williams Popeye film that is, not sure of the original source) Instead of spinach it's super mushrooms. Why this came to mind, because I remember reading/hearing that Shigeru Miyamoto original idea before Donkey Kong was a Popeye game. And that, well, could be a reference to that.
I believe I have seen a handful more actually. I just saw it again today, but I swear there is a triforce on one of the street signs in Brooklyn, one of the monkey mechanics has a 64 on his uniform. In my opinion, Peach lighting the spear and throwing it at King Bobomb's wick is very zelda like. The 917 area code for their business is NYC. This is all blatantly obvious but not sure if it was mentioned –when peach makes Mario prove himself on the obstacle course, he needs a mushroom power up to be able to jump far enough. The repeated nature of trying to make his way through the course was nostalgic, the same frustration every Mario player has experienced.

Might be a stretch. When peach used a contraband ice flower power up, calling off bowser’s wedding, it took five hits to subdue bowser. In the SMB series(NES,SNES,etc.), it takes about 5 fireballs to take down bowser or his sun boss koopalings in each castle!
