Do you really know the truth about dog socialization? Here's a link to a video that you need to consider: https://youtu.be/YVvd8RrRjRA
I hope you found this video helpful, and as always, Happy Training! ~Ken
How do you do this with two dogs at a time. I have two small dogs and live in an apt budget with a lot of dog neighbors. I need them not to react to other dogs while on the leash. My leash goes over my shoulder with two attached leads. Help I'm close to eviction if I don't get them to understand. I take them to a large park daily. Can I train them both at the same time? Thanks.
Thank you so much
It’s taken me a while to find this video. I feel like it’s a real blind spot in all of your puppy raising videos (which I really rate, and recommend all the time by the way). My pup is 8 months old, well trained and well behaved, but other dogs are her kryptonite. There’s a plethora of videos on how to train a reactive dog but I wish there was more on how to train your puppy to pass other dogs etc as it’s such a huge part of day to day dog ownership. Like how to prevent it growing to reactive energy, rather than dealing with when it occurs.
But love your videos and have already tried this with success! So glad I’ve found it now 🙂
i have trained many a dog with this but i ham sorry there is some that will not how many times you try been doing it for 2 month with a whippet no chance it does work but believe me not with every dog how hard you try
My dog has no interest in treats (or toys) when there are dogs, squirrels, rabbits, or cats anywhere visible to her. The dog could be hundreds of feet away- she will shriek with excitement and try to escape. She sounds like I'm killing her- it's this high-pitched shrieking.
My dog dont care about treats or his ball when theres another dog and hes a ball addict
Also what do you do when your dog pulls on the leash. I don’t want to hurt her. She’s also great at escaping harnesses.
Why would this be done? I thought dogs were supposed to be social. Dog ownership is confusing. And I think it confuses dogs as well.
Why should a dog ignore another dog?
They should be allowed to look at their surroundings and take the world in. Teaching them social cues is another story but please don’t teach your dogs to ignore the world. It’s going to lead to a very unhappy dog
Thank you so much! Very helpful. Can I do this outside a dog park or a puppy day care where my dog will go in after practicing leave it or is that confusing?) Our local dog park. (I will also be looking at information on your site about how to help my dog practice entering those places calmly:))
My Jack Russell terrier doesn't care about even the best treats or toys, he really wants to attack my neighbors dogs and no toy or treat will make him ignore them unfortunately
I live in Manhattan, I don't have the luxury of distance. Can you do a video on that?
That’s all well and good saying “leave it” if your dog responds to it.. my dog can do “leave” and “stay” but when he sees another dog everything goes out the window.. Barry even wants to sit
Do you have any advice for a dog that has been attacked by other dogs? I'm trying to desensitize my border collie. I want to bring her to the park and just sit with her there because of all of the stimulation. But my concern is that even though dogs are not supposed to be off-leash, they often are. So dogs sometimes run up to her, which is bad because of her reactivity. Would a temporary fence do the trick? Do you think there's value in sitting inside of a small enclosure with her at the park until her reactions start to fade?
I have 2 dogs and if I walk each one separately they are the best well behaved pups but walk them together and they get very aggressive and go mental at other dogs, even if the other dog is a half a block away.
My girl has an understanding, but each time she sees a new dog she wants to go see it but after that first time she then ignored the dog
Where is the first part of "leave it"? I see no link
Oh my, my dog is going to get fatter at the end of this training 😅
This is so helpful. I could not figure out how to control how far the other dogs were—outside the dog park is an excellent idea.
I’m walking my sisters a one year old, 100lb Burnese. Shes good in every other way and learns quickly but this is her problem area.
Treats and leave it does not work for my dog. I've even tried distracting her or blocking her view. She just freaks out and growls and tries to get over to the other dog. I hate taking her for walks for this reason.
omgosh!! FINALLY!! I have watched so many videos looking for someone who is working with a dog that has NOT already been fully trained for whatever the vid was about. It was so frustrating and i felt like the biggest failure because my puppy wouldnt just get it immediately like the dog in the video.Thank You!!
Great video, very helpful. I rescued my dog from a shelter and it looks exactly like the one in the video, I'm under the assumption that my dog is a half breed and I wanted to ask you which breed is the dog in the video. All the best.
Great video! I just found your vid today! 3 days ago I started doing desensitization near the dog park from a 50 fr distance and working up to 20 feet ! Today is day 3. So have to remember to remain having a calm tone, no excitement- because it causes excitement. Toward the end of your video when you rewarded dog you got overly excited and it caused the dog to be roused more and bark. My dog doesn’t bark near dog park, but a lot of whining and pulling. He is doing better and excited to get him to walk better when he sees another dog on walks. He has a good heel and looks back and checks with me.
Nothing distracts my cane corso when she sees other dogs she's 8 months and I rescued her 2 weeks ago and every dog she sees she wants to attack and even people she lunges at
Tryna teach my dog how to ignore distractions, ha! I already need help
Will this type of correction teach the dog that other dogs are bad?
I ask because I had a dog trainer scold me about using this cue with my puppy when she was barking and wanting to play with a dog on a leash while she was on a leash.
I absolutely need this demonstrated WITHOUT treats!! My dog will not take treats – she will initially take the treat in her mouth but she'll drop it in a few seconds and just walk away.
I NEED someone to provide a REAL alternative to treats.
No one who teaches the treat-based training has a clue how to train a pup who has zero interest in food. Tho, I did have one trainer suggest no feeding of any kind until she starts obeying….I'm so desperate that I might actually go there.
Thank you. Should we hold off on doggy play dates until she learns how to ignore dogs?
My dog doesn't respond to treats while walking, she is far to excited. Goes mad when she sees other dogs.
