Is this the end of Intel-based Macs? Apple confirms bittersweet update policy for MacOS

WWDC 2025 is a big day for Apple users since it’s when the tech giant previews future updates. This year, we saw the introduction of a robust UI redesign called Liquid Glass. But sometimes the most important news comes after the keynote presentation.

During the Platforms State of the Union, Apple announced that MacOS 26 Tahoe will be the final version of the operating system that will roll out to Intel-based Mac computers. This means that starting in 2026, you must own an M1 or newer MacBook to receive all the improvements and new features that MacOS 27 will bring.

The list of supporting devices is rather small. According to the official MacOS Tahoe preview page, the 2019 16-inch Mac Pro, 2019 13-inch MacBook Pro, 2020 iMac, and 2020 MacBook Pro will be the last four to receive the new OS. If you look closely, not a single Intel-based MacBook Air or Mac mini is on the list. They’ve been dropped.

This news isn’t really surprising, as Apple often ends hardware and software support for older machines. Realistically speaking, it was only a matter of time.

Intel-based Macs should continue to receive important security updates when MacOS Tahoe rolls out later this year. 9To5Mac states that the Mac models running the new system “will continue to receive security updates for another three years”, but after that, it’s over.

Right now, it’s hard to say for sure without further details from Apple. So, we reached out to Apple to ask what its plans are for security patches. Will all Intel-based Macs continue to receive those updates, or are they exclusive to the four models previously mentioned? If it’s the latter, how long will they receive the patches before they end forever?

I’ll update this story if I get a response back. In the meantime, I strongly encourage you to upgrade if you’re still on the old Intel-based Mac.
