1X Technologies has introduced Redwood, an artificial intelligence model designed for its humanoid, NEO. The company said Redwood enables NEO to perform household tasks autonomously.
Redwood is intended to allow NEO robot to move, perceive, and interact within home environments. 1X said the AI model was trained on real-world data and is designed to facilitate tasks such as laundry, answering doors, and navigation within familiar spaces.
1X said key features of Redwood include its ability to generalize, which allows NEO to handle variations in tasks and interact with unfamiliar objects. The model is trained on a dataset of information from 1X’s EVE and NEO robots and is designed to exhibit learned behaviors such as hand selection for tasks and attempting retries if an initial grasp fails.
Redwood also incorporates whole-body and multi-contact manipulation, which 1X said allows for joint control of locomotion and manipulation. This is intended to enable bracing and leaning behaviors during manipulation. The model supports mobile bi-manual manipulation, allowing NEO to position itself for tasks, perform actions requiring movement across space, and manipulate objects while in motion.
According to 1X, Redwood operates fully on NEO’s onboard embedded GPU, indicating it is compute-efficient. The system also integrates with an off-board language model for voice control, which is designed to predict user intent from voice and conversation context in real-time.
The company had a huge demo area at the 2025 NVIDIA GTC event in San Jose, CA. The NEO robot demo ran nearly continuously throughout the show, albeit as a teleoperated demo.
“Redwood is NEO’s AI designed to be helpful around the home,” said Eric Jang, VP of AI at 1X. “It is one of the first end-to-end mobile manipulation systems designed specially for whole body manipulation and mobile manipulation of biped humanoid robots. We’re looking forward to sharing further updates as we scale up deployments of Redwood to more chores in more homes.”
Berndt Børnich, CEO and founder of 1X, was the guest on Episode 166 of The Robot Report Podcast. Børnich discussed the launch of 1X’s humanoid robot, NEO, and the mission to address labor shortages through robotics. He emphasizes the importance of designing robots for home environments to gather diverse data for AI training, ensuring safety and compliance, and navigating regulatory challenges. The discussion also touches on the public perception of robots and the future of humanoid robotics in society. You can listen to the conversation here or anywhere you get your podcasts.
