Anker has recalled more than 1.1 million units of a popular model of its portable PowerCore power banks after receiving reports of overheating.
The company announced the recall of the PowerCore 10000 model number A1263, which has been linked to 19 reports of the devices catching fire or exploding.
The power banks, which Anker says may have overheating lithium-ion batteries, were sold online through Amazon, Newegg, eBay and other retailers. They were on sale between June 2016 and December 2022 in the United States.
According to a report by the Consumer Products Safety Commission, the devices have caused more than $60,700 in property damage and two minor injuries from burns.
What to do if you’re affected
Anker is telling customers to stop using the devices immediately and is offering a replacement or a $30 gift card for those affected.
If you want a replacement, you’ll need to submit a photo of the recalled power bank showing the model and serial numbers, your name, the date, and the word “recalled” written on the device.
You don’t need a receipt from your original purchase, but you will need proof that you’ve disposed of the device. Anker says you can contact your local hazardous waste centre for advice on how to dispose of the power bank safely. The recall is a reminder that lithium-ion batteries can be a fire risk if they’re damaged or overheated. That’s why airlines have been revising their policies on portable chargers in recent years.
