We did our research and found ours, "Libby" Faunkenhaus 1st generation in the US. Red and black blanket back & her grandfather was a CSD. As a police officer I was lucky enough to have a K9 officer friend to help me. She did not understand English, but she was bi-lingual in 6 months. We got to enjoy her for 12 years, RIP Libby.
I would include the Shilo. It may not be AKC, but it is a good dog.

We went from a West German Show Line to an East German DDR. The difference was night and day. Our WGSL was very obedient and tolerant of strangers and other dogs. However, despite her price tag, she developed numerous health problems. Our EGDDR is basically like a 100 lb Belgian Malinois. Incredibly intelligent (even by GSD standards). He is tolerant of strangers and LOVES small children, but not other dogs. More energy than a nuclear reactor. At age 8, he's never had a single health problem.

You didn't mention the Australian show line. I have one. They are large, more horizontal with a less sloped back. Big heads…well just big. Ours is as soft as a brush . Rolls over for tummy rubs. I don't know about the line as a whole, but he chases the cats which is a downside and can get very protective if other dogs approach us. 45kg of floof.

I had a DDR gsd for 12 years these dogs are not for your average dog owner we worked him for 8 years before he settled down a little bit. When we had kids he was incredible with them. They are very protective and love to works.
