Two questions are being conflated here – whether that's deliberate or not, I don't know:

1. Is there intelligent life elsewhere in the universe? (Probably)
2. Has the Earth ever been visited by extraterrestrial life forms?

Another consideration concerns the weight we assign to eye-witness testimony (and this applies to other areas such as the bigfoot phenomenon). On the one hand, eye-witness testimony, even in the absence of other evidence, could get you life in prison without parole. On the other, eye-witnesses to rare or unusual phenomena are often dismissed as cranks. What's it to be? You can't have it both ways.
