Universal Robots (UR), a leading developer of collaborative robot (cobot) arms, today at automatica in Germany released its UR Studio simulation tool. UR said UR Studio is built on PolyScope X, the company’s open and AI-ready software platform.
UR Studio enables customers, partners and integrators to build 1:1 online simulations of workcells and simulate every key aspect of the setup. With UR Studio, users can test robot movements, simulate reach, speed and workflow, and calculate cycle time.
“It’s all about confidence and ease of deployment,” said Tero Tolonen, Universal Robots’ chief product officer. “Whether you are new to automation or an experienced customer optimizing a complex cell, you want assurance and certainty before making the final decision on your solution. With UR Studio, we now provide an intuitive, easy-accessible tool to simulate and visualize the end-user setup and thoroughly test the cell and its capabilities – mapping out details for maximum efficiency and performance.”
UR Studio gives users the ability to interact with UR’s robot portfolio and various components – such as pallets, machines and workpieces – and end effectors, including standard grippers often used with UR cobots. Items can be configured to the user’s preferences with the option of importing elements to mimic the workspace. This ensures the final solution fits within the real-world environment, which results in smoother deployments and faster return on investment. UR Studio also allows for potential issues to be identified early on, reducing downtime and avoiding the risk of costly adjustments.
UR Studio is provided without charge and runs on desktop browsers requiring no installation. Users do need to log into the UR Studio website to get started. The simulated environment currently offers pre-made templates for the most common cobot applications such as machine tending, screwdriving, palletizing and pick-and-place. UR said it will continue to add new application templates to the simulator.
UR Studio is initially available in English and will soon be released in German, Spanish, Chinese (simplified) and Japanese.
UR said PolyScope X is built to support simulation from the ground up, so users can create and validate solutions in a virtual space before committing to the floor. From exploring different robot models or choosing which setup works best to testing optimized cycle times, UR Studio lets you experiment freely with Polyscope X, enabling you to solve specific automation challenges and deploy with certainty.
UR earlier this month announced early access to its Direct Torque Control technology for cobots. The technology gives researchers and developers real-time control of all the joints in a UR cobot at 500 Hz, with no custom stack required. Having the ability to directly control the torque of all the arm’s joints opens vast opportunities for cobots to carry out demanding tasks, the company said.
UR surpassed 100,000 cobots sold over its lifetime earlier in 2025. In May, the company released the UR15, its fastest cobot yet. The UR15 has a maximum TCP speed of 5 m/s to reduce cycle times, increase productivity, and reduce costs across applications and industries. For pick-and-place applications, the company said the UR15 delivers up to 30% cycle time improvements compared with other UR models.
