What is the Apple MFi program?

The Apple MFi program enables third-party companies to receive everything they need to create and manufacture electronic accessories that connect to Apple products using licensed technologies. Apple explains this includes “technical specifications, hardware components, certification tools and badge artwork”.

What does Apple MFi certification mean?

Essentially, an Apple MFi certification shows that although the electronic accessory isn’t made by Apple, it’s still made with Apple-certified technologies and specifications. This means the accessory is compatible with your Apple device.

What is the difference between MFi and non MFi?

The main difference is that MFi-certified products include Apple proprietary technologies and components to ensure they are perfectly compatible with Apple products. Non-MFi products, on the other hand, do not use Apple-licensed technologies, which can potentially harm your devices or aren’t of the same quality.

Can I use a non-MFi cable for my iPhone?

Of course, you can use a non-MFi cable for your iPhone however it is advised that you stick with an MFi cable and adapter instead. Not only do non-MFi cables tend to break sooner than on with an MFi certification, but their use can also void the warranty of your device. 

In extreme cases, non-MFi cables can risk overheating, short-circuiting or even harming your iPhone’s battery. Generally speaking, we’d always recommend avoiding using a non-MFi cable for extended periods of time. 

Can using a cheap charger damage an iPhone?

Cheap doesn’t necessarily mean the charger or cable has been poorly made nor that it’s a guarantee to damage your iPhone. What you should always look out for is the “Made for iPhone” logo on the product’s packaging, which should offer you peace of mind that your accessory is safe for use.

If a product doesn’t clearly state that it’s MFi then it’s probably best to avoid buying it, as you’ll likely have to replace it sooner rather than later.
