Hello Gareth, I am a graphic design student at Bulent Ecevit University. Your videos have helped me a lot. Thank you very much for that.Sevim Sıla Sarı
this video is pretty informative for those who are already graphic designers so definitely it'll help guiding any beginner
Thank you so much for this Gareth David!
You are criminally underrated.
This was encouraging to me in addition to the others who expressed the same sentiment. I last drew some good 18 years ago, but I'm about to enroll for a graphic design degree, even though I've barely picked up a pencil since then or really created something. Unless I count my occasional creative projects in games of which the outcomes shocked me. XD Even though I spent minimal time in anything of the sort, I regard myself as a creative person with latent ability. Now, for the first time ever, I am teaching myself to draw, etc. and desire to unlock that potential, and I'm relieved to hear I don't have to 'catch up' with people who've been doing art since they were kids to make a success of my journey ahead.
Your videos are amazing
This video really helps me a lot. I don't have an art background and I am thinking to go on the road of a graphic designer. Now I realized that I can learn step by step to fulfill my knowledge for this. Thanks a lot, Gareth!
Congratulations for all your videoz !!!! I am studying graphic design and i try yo do practise alone … The problem is that in YouTube there are so many video with different themes …. Can you give me a advise what path I could follow … First of all fundamental …. Then ?? I feel little anxious because i haven't got art background and i am not good to sketch … There is a solution ?
I'am an ex accountant then to move to web & mobile applications development company in Indonesia. How do i start my changing direction? I am now an account executive at this company, and should translate the client's needs upon web design & mobile apps design as well as make sure the project delivered accordingly in a timely as well as on budget.
I had someone put it like this: Art is like masturbation, Graphic/Commercial Art is like sex. The goal of Art/Masturbation is to please yourself, the goal Design/Sex is to please someone else.
This is very helpful!❤
I really needed this…thank you so much
Great video, I just made one on a similar topic too! I definitely don't think an art background is required — the only reason it's so common is that they're both based in creativity. Knowing fundamentals of colour theory and design is essential, but I don't believe this requires any actual art experience to obtain. Really like your mindset and explanation of everything!
This is very articulate. I cant imagine how much hard work he had to put in to make this video
1:46 great
It's true,
I'm not well in art.
But I'm a designer
Thank you ❤
Wonderful knowledge given by you. Thanks a lot
Love the way how you shed the lights. I have been a Graphic designer/artist for more than 15 years without any formal education. And as you said one need not to carry the papers but one needs to know the basics…. With the experiences i learnt the basics. Thanks for the awesome and crystal clear messages for those people who want to take up Graphic designing as a career.
Hi Gareth, this is really informative video, I enjoyed watching it and learnt a lot, however I do feel like being good at art like drawing, sketching and painting will help you execute the generated ideas precisely, it also helps others to visualise, sketching helps in generating ideas too, it’s a good skill to have for graphic designers. Sometimes when we use illustrations in graphic design, it’s better if the graphic designers learn to do that illustrations digitally.
Hi @GDS
Sleek.designer (Sarmad Mustafa) here!
Here're the NOTES I took for this video as I always do this from other videos.
(and I loved the new style you're doing in this series) <3
1. Creativity is a journey that starts from a very young age.
2. Every child is an artist & the real thing is to make'em remains the artist as they grew up.
3. BEST ONE – A Good Artist doesn't make a good graphic designer and a good Graphic Designer doesn't make a good Artist.
4. There're more to being as a graphic designer than just making things look good or beautiful.
5. Graphic design is more about Solving the problems and conveying the ideas that really matters and solves the problem.
6. Successful Design = Problem Solved + Goals Met + Clear Visual Communication.
7. Graphic Design is thoughts & Research process that goes into the idea to make it work or to do a solution of a problem.
8. A Good Designer always thinks, generate ideas because Design is more of FUNCTION and ART is more about displaying or experience that function visually.
9. A Designer have to follow the BRIEF, that means less freedom of expression but creative approach and it solves the problem that's mentioned in the brief.
10 . Is ART needed for the graphic design education? YES & could be NO, depends upon where you'd go.
11. In Graphic Design your ability to think, research and solve the problem matters the most.
12. ART is typically judged at the end results e.g. painting, sculpting etc.
WHAT MAKES A GOOD GRAPHIC DESIGNER
1. Having a good understanding of visual elements and design principles.
2. Being a good THINKER, COMMUNICATOR, PROBLEM SOLVER & CRITICAL THINKER
3. Being good at coming up with new ideas & challenging your ideas
4. Having good Discipline & Judgement.
5. Able to work on deadlines.
6. Able to be object.
BEING GOOD IN ANY TOOL OR DRAWING DOES NOT MAKES YOU A GOOD DESIGNER, IT'S THE QUALITY OF THE IDEAS , PROCESS AND THINKING THAT DOES MAKE YOU A GOOD GRAPHIC DESIGNER OR DESIGNER
7. A GOOD DESIGN PROCESS EXAMPLE = UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM, RESEARCH AND GENERATE NEW AND FRESH IDEAS
*WHAT CAN A BACKGROUND IN ART WILL HELP IN & WHAT DOES NOT. *
1. Understanding SHAPES & Forms ( DOES HELP )
2. Color theory ( DOES HELP )
3. Art-working and Crafting IDEAS ( DOES HELP )
4. Coming up with ideas ( DOES not HELP )
5. Deploying a design process ( DOES not HELP )
6. Focusing & improvement of your design ( DOES not HELP )
7. Critical Thinking ( DOES not HELP )
8. Objectivity ( DOES not HELP )
Being good at Photoshop / Illustrator does not make you a good designer. Very true.
This comparison is excellent and very informative. I wish my daughter could understand English enough to listen to this video. She's only 10 but she loves to draw, especially in digital format. I guess she got that from me.
I used to work in digital design and social network management with no design/art background but your courses helped me a lot.
Maybe one day she will follow my steps and be better than I was.
Great video 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
I love your new video Style…

Oh man, Gareth just made me get out of my anti social media cave and check those books in Instagram, damn you and your silver educator tongue.
Thanks a lot for useful information.
Thank you so much..very helpful for me.
Thank you so much.. i really appreciate every words💝💝 i have my heart in this but then its too difficult in my past. Anyways.. thank you💖
This was a really well-timed video for me, I have a background in engineering and I'm moving into UI/UX design, and being reminded that having an art background isn't essential really helps ease my mind.
I love this
Thanks for all the videos!! ✨🌻 I've learnt a lot from your videos over the years
